It has been a while since I've been out, since ice fishing to be exact. I have been going stir crazy. But Saturday soccer and other obligations have kept me away. I had had enough and loaded up the kids and headed to Utah lake for a day of kitty catching. Lauched at Lindon about 8:30 a.m. and headed South along the shoreline for a couple of miles. Found a depression in the reeds and eased the boat into casting distance. Nightcrawlers or carp meat under a bobber were the weapons of choice. It didn't take long and we were filling the cooler with 15-18 inch channels. I love these spotted young cats, they are great eating.
We moved a couple of times during the day when it would slow down, looking for the larger depressions in the reeds and easing the boat into them. Each time we caught fish after fish. At one point all three of my boys had their bobbers under the water. It was pretty comical trying to deal with three fish at once. I had finally had enough and told the kids that the only ones going into the cooler would be ones that swallowed it.
At the end of the day we had kept 16 cats, and turned loose twice that many. We also caught a couple of bullheads, one bluegill, and one perch that somehow got a 4 inch piece of carpmeat and a 4/0 hook all the way down. Both the gill and the perch came home with us as well.
Had a big catfish fry on Sunday with battered fillets and homemade tartar sauce. I saved the other half of the fillets and threw them in the smoker, which is making my mouth water right now just thinking about them. They turned out great. Here's a couple of pictures of the fish as well as my kids enjoying themselves on the water.
