We finally got one third trip out for sturgeon. i think if i stick with it for a few years i might can catch one every other trip out. we have fished 3 deep in the boat and it was awsome. it was about 2.5 to 3 ft.....My buddy caught it so i hope i am next. I know there are more and larger fish below the dam in the river but i have a 18 ft pontoon boat. looks like i will be staying topside. Headin out again Friday after work. then saturday with the family. We will try to catch some crappy and just toodle around while i am doing that, I want to try trollin for trout. I will let yall know how i do. Never tried trollin fer trout. heard it is fun.

How deep were you fishing. My dad lives in Mountain Home (retired military)and we have tried the Sturgeon fishing once in march down bellow the dam yhis year but got skunked. I've herd that the fishing picks up toward the evening just before and just after dark. fresh crappie filets or fresh trout heads.

true, fishing is much better an hour before sunrise and from sunset to hour after dark. i been finding most sturgeon in the 60 foot range. we been having some pretty successful trips up to cj. last tuesday we hooked ten sturgeon and brought in eight. fishing the early morning and late evening is the key

We hooked that rascal in 35 ft waters. We were using squid. Might try different bait next time. Wow i could not imagine a 10 fish hookup with 8 landed...AWESOME
Averys i got to do some research in trolling becuase that sounded foriegn to me. I just started reading on Pop Gear. I might have to stick with crappy until i get spun up on the topic. Hopefully more post with picts after this weekend. Thanks for all the tips.

Friday night three of us fished for about 6 hrs and had too little bites. we fished from 30 ft to 60 ft about 5 different places. saturday we vollunteered to do paint the town and finished to late to go. Sunday went after crappy and had no luck. We did catch about 25 bass between me and my wife...kids got skunked but didnt fish much and still had a good time.

how heavily are you using your fish finder to locate sturgeon? i don't cast a line until i see larg log-looking shapes comming up off the bottom of the fish finder, i meander around in the boat untill i come across sturgeon on the fish finder then throw my rods out behind me. it might help if you have a dual-beam sonar, use the wide beam to locate the general area and then go to the smaller beam and make a second pass to pin-point the sturgeon. smaller the angle of the second beam, the better.

How shallow of water have you been able to see sturgeon on the bottom with your fish finder while boating around? Just wondering if the boat spooks them in the shallow water with the engine running? I have seen sturgeon on my fish finder pass under my boat when I have been anchored up but I never had any success searching for them (probably haven't given it enough of a try).

well below the dam on the river i seen them in ten feet of water. but above the dam, the shallowest i seen them is around fifty. i imagine (and almost certain) they go shallower but i dont spend much time in the shallower waters because i found larger concentrations in the deeper holes.

Thanks. One of my popular fishing spots above the dam has water depths of 24 to 25' deep. Are these deep holes that you are fishing really snaggy?

very few snags, if you stick to what used to be the main river channel before the reservoir was created, there usually are less snags that i've found. its on the steep drop offs that i get snags but once the topography levels off, snags aren't too bad. but whenever you are fshing CJ there always seems to be a few rocks that steals your rig [

where is the best place to find a great topo of CJ? I want to buy the hot maps for the lowrance but the wallet says no...the wife agrees with the wallet too. I will take a website or a paper map. But i do want a good detailed map. I got the one from cabelas and i am not impressed.

i got my topo map of CJ from sportsman's warehouse. it works for me. and it is accurite enough for me to identify places that would be productive for sturgeon. i haven't looked at any other topo maps of CJ so i can't really say if it is any better than another map. i think it was fifteen bucks or so, worth checking it out anyways.

you asked ow shallow sturgeon will go while fishing near crane falls last year i watched about a 6 footer chasing small fish get into about 9 inches of water it was way neat to watch that dino hunt

the first sturgon I ever got to see was about a 5 to 6 foot fish that got between us and the boat when we were taking it off a sandbar. That was way cool.

there was a video on youtube that showed some people hand feeding a sturgeon while they were bank fishing. its really cool, i need to find the video again. they definately get real shallow. i just don't like fishing for them in real shallow waters

That was over below Bonneville Dam, and the gators come up shallow there to pick up shad carcasses theat got blown through the turbines. I have seen big mamas grab peoples salmon that were on stringers in the water over there.
