Hello!
We returned from Henry's last night and we wanted to share our trip with you!

1st, The weather SUCKED...lol...BUT, we caught fish!

We arrived Saturday afternoon and set up camp. With it raining and the wind blowing 30 mph, we opted for steaks and whiskey and an early retirement to the sleeping bag.

Sunday morning on the water at 5:30 AM. The wind was blowing stiff and it was raining off and on. Having seen fish in shallow water at the dock, we hit the Targee Creek area and no luck at all. We moved up to the hatchery area and no luck at all. We headed to the County Dock area and soon left as the boats acumulated quickly. We fished the West Side and no luck. We returned to the dock with the stench of the black furry critter with the white stripe down his back all over us. Evening fishing was better. We hit the Cliffs area to avoid winds and caught 6 fish between 5 and 730 PM. Anchored in 15 foot of water, used a sink 4 and picked up fish in 12 foot of water on Purple Showgirls. The largest was the 5.15 lb, 23.5" hybrid in the attached pic. Mrs Dragger was also thrilled with a fish that was only 19.5" log but weighed 4.35 lbs! At the fish cleaning station I saw a guy cleaning a large hybrid and we cut his entrails open and found black leeches. He shared with us he has fished the west side.
Monday was more crap weather and we fished the West Side Between A Frame and the Willow area. We Picked up 13 fish and stayed on the boat most of the day. Black leeches cast into the pockets of 6-8 foot water along that side produced, but all fish in the 1.5-3 lb range.
Tuesday was a beautiful day and we fished the Hybrid Hole and the Blue Roof hole and caught 14. We drifted flies that day with Wolleys with blue/green tinsels and blacks with copper tinsels and caught more of the same size fish, no big ones. We also trolled some blades and worms for a "break"....same size fish and the techique worked well.
Wed morning was fair on the weather and we caught 11 before we had to pack and go home. Largest was 4.75 lb hybrid.

Notes: We saw some upsetting things. A boat tied up to the Dock and was snagging fish with a huge steelie lure w/treble hook. He kept some and threw back some, which 2 bellied up. Another guy was catching the fish and milking them of the eggs, and rough treatment as well. Another couple took 18 fish to the cleaning station. When I jumped them about the limit, they said they were fishing here before those rules were ever in effect. Honestly I was an AHOLE trying to stop what was going on and wound up reporting it to the Sheriff's Office. I never saw a F&G rep at the lake anywhere.

I fished Chironomids till I was blue in the Face, only 2 small fish

We did catch 3 Brookies (released) in the 15-17" range.

Flygoddess's Furled Leaders are a dream and We highly recommend them. Also, her tip on Pline is great. I fished Halo instead of tapered tippets and caught fish. Thanks FG!

We really wanted some of those huge Hybrids but never got into them. Oh Well. We're happy to have learned some stuff about the lake and caught fish: and look forward to a return fall trip!

Attached are a Few pics of our :Home Sweet Home Camp, The Fishing "Arsenal" lol, 3 Fish, The Weather Overall, and a Rainbow!

Thanks!

Too bad the weather didn't cooperate more, and it is Sad to hear about the people not respecting the rules. It is good to hear you still picked up quite a few fish. Also the last pic in your series is pretty beautiful. Thanks for the good info.

Nice looking fish. This weather this spring has been something else. I can not believe what some people do. I would have been all over the poachers and snaggers. A few pictures and a call to the poaching hot line would have happened quite quickly. It just blows my mind sometimes.

That last picture is beautiful.
Nice fish too. Hopefully we'll get up there in a couple weeks and the weather will have settled down. There should have been fish cops all over the place too. The state boat dock has a steam cleaner for the boats and usually the sherriff's deputy hangs out there most of the day and eats donuts. Least he did last year.
I got a kick out of your run in with the "grandfathered" poachers. You have to have the IQ of a toaster to tell someone that you've been fishing someplace long before a limit was passed, and then have someone believe it? I guess regulations are for certain people only.[laugh]

Nice report and congrats on the fish!
I did think it was funny that when you said one of the pictures was of a rainbow, I thought to myself - that's weird I didn't think there were any rainbows in Henry's! I guess sometimes I get fish on the brain!

Thank You & You're very welcome!

Actually the Sherrif stopped by our camp as a result of my call and tooj a report. He also pulled a safety inspection on my boat, lol. I never saw them again and their boat never left their side dock.

Intersting. I didn't think so either but I swear my wife caught a rainbow trout. I looked this fish over pretty good before releaase....it's a rainbow.. Sorry, no pic, we only had the Nikon with us and were careful about when we took it out, weather the way it was.

That seems pretty C.S. when the sheriff thanks you by running a safety check on your boat. I'm just not sure what the heck the "authorities" are thinking up there!

Thanks for the excellent report and pics!

Thanks for the great report. I'm planning on getting up to Henry's sometime soon. That makes me so mad about fisherman that can't follow rules. Is it really that big of a deal to take the limit? I mean, Does anyone really need 18 fish to take home~? [pirate] When one person screws up, it screws up everything for everyone else.

Thanks for the kind words.
The poachers really chap my behind though. Like I said, we had to get the invasive sticker and license our motorized Pontoons "LAST YEAR even Idaho had the stickers".
A 12' aluminum LOCAL boat comes in as we are loading. Three guys in the MOTORIZED boat. No life jackets I could see, no numbers or State Stickers on the side of the boat and NO INVASIVE sticker.
The Sheriff was right there, so I asked, are you letting them get away with this? He said, they are local boys, they don't go to any other waters......!!!!!!!
Someone needs to report the cops up there. The LAW is for everyone.
Great post and love the Female action there.

I am kind of surprised the Game and Fish does not have a number for Damon Keen at the public access areas to call directly to report poaching instead of all the other numbers that get dialed and who knows if anyone will show up. There was a similar happening last year at this time and he ended up saying he wanted folks to call him directly on poaching issues. Since he lives right on the lake it is the quickest way to get action if he is around. Not sure on the call in operation game thief number if they are staffed on weekends to deal with matters.

Sounds like you had a pretty good trip there Flydragger, especially if the snow flies have not hatched yet(white death!)

I was thinking the same thing. I do have Damon's number and that is who I call.
These old timers can be a problem even on the water. We were fishing an area and noticed a boat moving closer and closer.
My friend landed a nice 28" and the boat moved right in. I asked him what he thought he was doing. He answered "I always fish this spot...this is my spot, everyone knows this". The words that came out of my mouth weren't very lady like.[mad]

Great pics! My buddy is there now. Freezing in his tent and said the fishing was slow; 2-3 foot waves. Sent me a pic on his phone last night however of a 22" brookie; weighed around 3.5 lbs he estimated. Beautiful fish on a "yellow pattern". I'm in Pismo Beach for 3 weeks. I'll be at Henrys in mid to late October when the place is about deserted.

Yes...by the way the boat clean station will inspect you and give you a Pass, good for as long as you stay, provided you dont launch into another lake. Saves some time...

I know...I thought it might be for the coubty feed all fish dry, lol. We eat a lot of fish but we only brought home 2, and had 1 for dinner while we were there. But 18?????

Oh Yeah, we got a hatch. The Good weather on Tues brought a different kind of "rain" Those snows were in our hair, eyes, mouth, ears, down our shirts..you name it LOL..
I have taken further steps on the culprits which I won't disclose on a public forum..just an FYU...
