Hello!
We returned from Henry's last night and we wanted to share our trip with you!
1st, The weather SUCKED...lol...BUT, we caught fish!
We arrived Saturday afternoon and set up camp. With it raining and the wind blowing 30 mph, we opted for steaks and whiskey and an early retirement to the sleeping bag.
Sunday morning on the water at 5:30 AM. The wind was blowing stiff and it was raining off and on. Having seen fish in shallow water at the dock, we hit the Targee Creek area and no luck at all. We moved up to the hatchery area and no luck at all. We headed to the County Dock area and soon left as the boats acumulated quickly. We fished the West Side and no luck. We returned to the dock with the stench of the black furry critter with the white stripe down his back all over us. Evening fishing was better. We hit the Cliffs area to avoid winds and caught 6 fish between 5 and 730 PM. Anchored in 15 foot of water, used a sink 4 and picked up fish in 12 foot of water on Purple Showgirls. The largest was the 5.15 lb, 23.5" hybrid in the attached pic. Mrs Dragger was also thrilled with a fish that was only 19.5" log but weighed 4.35 lbs! At the fish cleaning station I saw a guy cleaning a large hybrid and we cut his entrails open and found black leeches. He shared with us he has fished the west side.
Monday was more crap weather and we fished the West Side Between A Frame and the Willow area. We Picked up 13 fish and stayed on the boat most of the day. Black leeches cast into the pockets of 6-8 foot water along that side produced, but all fish in the 1.5-3 lb range.
Tuesday was a beautiful day and we fished the Hybrid Hole and the Blue Roof hole and caught 14. We drifted flies that day with Wolleys with blue/green tinsels and blacks with copper tinsels and caught more of the same size fish, no big ones. We also trolled some blades and worms for a "break"....same size fish and the techique worked well.
Wed morning was fair on the weather and we caught 11 before we had to pack and go home. Largest was 4.75 lb hybrid.
Notes: We saw some upsetting things. A boat tied up to the Dock and was snagging fish with a huge steelie lure w/treble hook. He kept some and threw back some, which 2 bellied up. Another guy was catching the fish and milking them of the eggs, and rough treatment as well. Another couple took 18 fish to the cleaning station. When I jumped them about the limit, they said they were fishing here before those rules were ever in effect. Honestly I was an AHOLE trying to stop what was going on and wound up reporting it to the Sheriff's Office. I never saw a F&G rep at the lake anywhere.
I fished Chironomids till I was blue in the Face, only 2 small fish
We did catch 3 Brookies (released) in the 15-17" range.
Flygoddess's Furled Leaders are a dream and We highly recommend them. Also, her tip on Pline is great. I fished Halo instead of tapered tippets and caught fish. Thanks FG!
We really wanted some of those huge Hybrids but never got into them. Oh Well. We're happy to have learned some stuff about the lake and caught fish: and look forward to a return fall trip!
Attached are a Few pics of our :Home Sweet Home Camp, The Fishing "Arsenal" lol, 3 Fish, The Weather Overall, and a Rainbow!
Thanks!
