Having located a place on the map called "Bear Creek Falls", and seeing no road or trail to the site, I HAD to attempt it. The first attempt last Fall was a failure; the site of the falls is down in a 400 foot deep gorge with cliffs on either side.
After scouring the internet in search of info, I discovered that there is a geocache located there, and the geocache guys give the lat/long of the ONE location where a person can scale down the cliffs and reach the falls. The falls are a natural barrier on the Wildhorse River, a little-known and little-fished course in Adams County, ID.
Armed with the "secret" of getting to the falls, the kids and I made the attempt on Saturday. While the hike was incredibly difficult, we were rewarded by seeing these falls during the incredible flood of 2010. Unfortunately, the flood also meant there would be no fishing. This small river is a sleeper (I even feel guilty posting this; I hope it stays secret). There is a good population of wild rainbows.
Since fishing was a bust, we headed back in Council and then up to Lost Valley Reservoir. The lake was DESERTED (because of the flood, I suppose) and we got a few casts in before it was too dark. Landed one 6" brookie.
Can't wait to visit this place again at low flow; The large pool at the base of the falls will be loaded with nice rainbows.
