Road damage affects salmon season opening
Road damage on the South Fork of the Salmon River will affect the opening of the salmon fishing season on June 12, 2010. Three days of heavy rain earlier this month has caused the river to be running high and has destroyed a 400 foot section of road that will be out for several months.
The road that was damaged is near mile post 23 downstream of Buckhorn Creek just before Buckhorn Campground. Because the damage occurred on land within the Payette National Forest, the U.S. Forest Service will supervise the repair of the road and regulation of traffic.
The Forest Service is allowing motorcycles, and ATVs to move through the damaged area but larger vehicles including SUVs are prohibited from travel down the road. As a result camping will not be allowed at the Buckhorn Bridge because the area will be used for vehicle turn arounds. Additional road restrictions in the area may be imposed by the Forest Service in the future. [#006699]http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/payette/[/#006699]
Idaho Fish and Game says that even if people can find a way into the area, "The South Fork is still running high with a large amount of debris moving downriver...there is no indication that salmon have moved into the river and with more rain in the forecast; (this) weekend will not be the time to fish for salmon." Fish and Game concludes saying the South Fork of the Salmon River remains unfishable.
