I had a buddy, John, and his little bro, Tom come up from Phoenix for a long weekend of fishing as I was unsupervised for Father's Day. The wife was attending a niece's baby shower out of state. ("It's okay honey, I think I'll be able to get by...")
We hit Otter Creek first thing Friday morning and got 8 between the 3 of us. Only one was not one of the new stockers. It was a 17", 2.5 lb rainbow. Luckily it was Tom, my buddy's bro who hooked up. He was pretty tickled as this was his biggest slimer to date. All the fish we got were on either rainbow or garlic Power Bait.
That afternoon we went up Clear Creek in search of fishable moving water. Clear Creek and Fish Creek were both blown out, high and murky with runoff. So we kept going up Shingle Creek and busied ourselves catching and releasing eager 6-8" rainbows on spinners for an hour or two.
Next morning we went up to Mill Meadow with hopes of filling a bucket with perch for fish tacos. We tried across from the ramp. No takers. A move up lake landed us in the middle of 'em. About 15-20' of water I think. They came on Ratfinkies and Ratsos with perchmeat. We also got a few browns to 16". 40 keepers out of 75 or so and we hit the road at 11 am. A quick stop on the Fremont River produced a few 9 to 12" browns and helped us form the plan for the next day.
Sunday morning we put in at Fish Lake in hopes of landing a few splake for Tom as he had never seen one of the hybrids. We ran across the glassy pond to the far side in my 14 footer with an eye out for the w**d. We got a few small rainbows and one nice splake on the troll. (pop geer and a worm or Rapala) then the w**d came. I didn't hesitate, reel 'em up and haul buns back toward the lodge. By the time we got back, it was white capping. We trolled the weedline between the lodge and Bowery for a while and got Tom's first splake and a 2 lb rainbow between the 9 inchers. It got just plain unpleasant so called it quits and headed for the Fremont again. We fished for about 3 hours and caught numerous small browns. We all caught and released up to 12 inch fish and had a blast with the gorgeous little browns.
Grilled slimers, fish tacos and frosty adult beverages with a couple lifelong buddies. What a great weekend!
