Went to Mantua do see if Sparky could handle a bit of walking and shore fishing with the fly rod today. Arrived at about 11 am at the new parking area in the N.E. corner, and locked the truck and camper as usual. Noticed 2 other vehicles and while walking shore line noticed a Hispanic family and black family fishing the shore. Wished em good luck and proceeded past em. Had a great time catching blues and releasing em for Sparky to chase but miss. [
]
Returned about 2pm (enough for Sparky) and the only vehicle there was a large black pick up with tinted windows with some people moving about inside, clothes strewn all around the vehicle. Well,------------. found my camper had it's side window forced open, screen ripped out and the shell latch force open. Yep. my favorite rod and brand-new reel gone. [mad][mad][mad][mad] Went to the only remaining vehicle and tapped on the window. A young black kid opened it and I noticed others in the vehicle, all kids. Anyway, I asked if they saw who broke into my truck? He said they were "asleep" but had noticed an Hispanic group earlier. Well, now what? I just couldn't bring myself to push the point (examine their truck, since I just didn't have just cause nor did I feel comfortable hassling kids for no just cause.[frown] Especially since most probably whoever did it was already gone.
Bottom line, your "stuff" ain't safe, even at Mantua. [mad] Am in the process of filing a police report. Be careful people, there are bad folks out there at all your fishing spots. That was my favorite stuff not to mention a brand-new reel. [frown]
To top it off, when I got home, Sparky was severally limping again. [frown][frown]

so moral of the story is "watch out for dangerous black and hispanic people"?
i fail to see how the ethnicity of the people you saw at the lake is relevant to the story. i'm sorry about your lost rod and dog's injury.

Sorry to hear about it, I HATE thieves! I had a pontoon boat stolen out of the bed of my truck a few years ago at east canyon, along with a fly rod & reel, it just makes me sick to see this stuff happening, I ever see anyone in my stuff, I will shoot first and ask questions later.

This surprises me a little though it shouldn't. Anyway I camped at Mantua on Memorial weekend. When I went out walking along the road around the lake I saw the Mantua police patrolling several different times.

Now that bites, and not in the GOOD way for a fishing trip. I've often worried for my "gear" when it's all loaded in the car and especially as I don't always get around to emptying my rig after each trip. And I think about the combined value of all the $2-$5 lures... not the mention the gulps!
Must take nads - considering a cop lives like right across the street from the trailer parking lot!
Went camping there last week with the kids. Maybe I need to worry more about leaving the kids on the shore when they get bored of the boat! I was feeling pretty comfy in having a campsite right there, and them going back and forth from camp to coast.
I did see a group of fairly shady looking young men - they weren't black or hispanic, but sporting tats, and one feller had those super stretched ear-rings. I just don't get that!
They seemed interested enough in the fishing results, and didn't seem to be causing any problems or breaking windows.
I am now reminded why I should be sure to take my wallet with me in the boat. Both in case the car is broken into, and so I can identified if I get swamped by some wake-board boat-beast and end up on the bottom of the lake!
Thanks for the warning Leaky. At least it's just common criminals, I was afraid from the title you were going to tell us the swimmer's itch was back!
Maybe they need to install, and advertise a web-cam or two, like they have at Willards north marina!

I knew I'd get this kind of comment. [frown] I argued with myself about this and decided to just report the facts of my observation and let the chips fall as they may. If you want to take it as an ethnic slam, that's your choice,
as it is. You're inferences are soooooooo wrong.[mad] The facts are as reported and who knows who stole the items. Sorry if I offended ethnic areas, it's just what happened and
I for one am tired of walking on egg shells about ethnic inferences. What happened is what happened. I happen to believe that there are good and bad folks out there from
all ethnic backgrounds including the so called "white" folks which by the way, could have come and gone in this time period.

Leaky sorry about your stuff getting swiped but thanks for the heads up. Sometimes we take it for granted that were out in nature and all is safe. The whole "sportsman" thing but unfortunately you have pieces of crap out there that do not respect any one else or their property. And for the political correctness BS. Aren't you tired of that? People have to be described. If the only two groups of people were Hispanics and African Americans well so be it. If it would have been some fat white dude with a Filipino wife then it may have been me you saw. But the whiney "don't call it what it is" BS is for the birds.
Once again sorry for your unfortunate occurrence.

Amen, thanks Bud!!!

That sucks Leaky. It dont matter on race, crooks are crooks !![frown] I try not to leave anything in my truck worth value when i leave. If the want the spare tire for the boat or empty beer cans or boat cover i guess they can have it!![crazy]

Sorry to hear about your loss [:/]. It's weird because I went to Mantua a couple of weeks ago, and I had an uneasy feeling about leaving my car while I was fishing. I guess it was justified. People are scum [mad]

does that minor, hypothetical revision sound funny? just sayin. prejudice can manifest subtly. i don't think you had any bad intention, i would just watch what you say, especially in a public forum. if you actually saw said black and/or hispanic kid stealing your stuff it would be a different story. anyway, carry on.
[signature]
Sorry to hear about the stolen stuff. It used to be you felt safe leaving camping gear and such out. It seemed outdoor type folks didnt steal. I have 2 friends that have been camping and went on day hikes, returning to find the camp had been raided, sleeping bags , lawn chairs and camp chef stove all gone. It is a
statement oour society when these things happen. By the way sorry to hear sparky was limping too. Sucks gettin old.

Facts are Facts- Thank you for calling it as you saw it- anything less would not have been the facts.
[signature]
Thanks for reporting that, Leaky. Facts are indeed facts, and here are some more:
Every time I go fishing over in that NE corner, (maybe half dozen times in the last 6 weeks), I have noticed that the vast majority of fishermen over there are indeed Hispanic. And it's not even close.
Now, most that I've ran across seemed to be friendly enough. It's a crying shame that no matter what ethnicity- some people would resort to thievery. Maybe we need more cops patrolling the parking lots. I'm sorry you lost your fishing gear.
[signature]
That is to bad leaky.. Sorry about what happened.. you saw african americans and you saw hispanics you asked the african americans if the saw any thing and they said they saw mexicans around your trailer there you go it is only odivious who did it.. but you cant blame the mexicans because then they will be on channel 5 yelling.. just my 2 cents... I am not racist or anything but facts are facts.. Pineviewfisher
[signature]
Funny how much different the responses are here compared to that other place ... Sorry to hear about your loss but karma has away of coming back to bite the thieves harder in the end..
[signature]
Now everytime I go to mantua , I'm gonna have some white BFT member scoping every move I make. Guess I'm just stating the facts.
[signature]
How could they be asleep and notice the hispanic group? If someone was breaking into any vehicle, even the dumbest ones wouldn't break into a truck when others are looking. Any normal person would have taken down the license plate of the thieves.
Its too bad you didn't call the cops to question the remaining truck. Its ashame that possibly your stuff was hidden in the truck only 2 feet in front of you...but who knows.
Thanks for giving "all the info", not the excluded version. You know darn well that there's always gonna be someone that touts "racist" and tries to jab you.
I'm a minority ...by the way.
Too bad about your stuff. I hope everyone stays aware and keeps an eye on suspicious activity. I worry about the same stuff all the time.
[signature]
You need to get Sparky a friend, a nice pit bull, and leave him in the vehicle next time, so when you find a couple of slaughtered crooks, you will definitely know who they are, or maybe not cuz puppy just might eat their faces. Oooohhh how i hate crooks. But don't worry what goes around comes around, check the KSL and Craiglist maybe you find your rod and reel.

I kind of avoided saying this since this new addition parking lot should have been a positive change for everyone to enjoy this fun sport and this area, but since they have constructed this new parking lot at this location, it has become much much more trashy and a lot less fun!!! Damn, why can't these changes be positive for the general law abiding public? [frown][frown][frown][frown] Sorry, that's just my observation!!! Sad, Sad,
. Man, I hate to see this. There are fewer and fewer areas as time goes by. I have to admit, over my 76 years I've been very, very blessed/lucky.
