i am new to fishing and have a new boyfriend who is into fishing big time . he wants to take me bluegill fishing friday at the horseshoe bend lake. i went to cabella's and one of the guys that worked there recomended this fishing pole it is an ugly stick pole 6'6" medium heavy action with a shakespear reel that has # 14 line he put on. my friend charlene that i work with says the pole is to much for bluegill is it?
what lure does bluegill like i bought a pink worm. thanks guys

welcome aboard and yea its pretty much over kill for bluegill and with 14 pound line pretty much over kill except for catfish and carp. i love ugly stiks tho they make a nice ultralight that would work great for bluegill and they make one called lady ugly stick that is black and pink if your into that. my daughter has one and loves it. Ive always just used a no 8 hook with a pinch of worm for bluegill but most jigs you catch crappie on will work.

wow if you told the clerk you wanted to be equipped for bluegill and this is the set-up he came up with i would say more in store training is in order ! not to disrespect your purchase. this is a reasonable " all purpose " set-up if you will only be using one rod.
as you get into fishing more you will collect many more rods. your set-up will work. i would have reservations about the 14 lb test however. the bluegill will definitely see the line and it will make casting small baits a chore. you may ask your boyfriend to tye you on a leader of 2-6 lb. test. as for lures a #10 hook with a pinch of earthworm about three feet under a quarter sized bobber is hard to beat.
welcome to the fishing sports ! my wife was never a fisherman until we met and now is more crazy about it than i am ! have fun

Hi,Evelynn welcome . As for blue gill fishing I use 4' ultra light rod and reel combo, with 4 to 8 lb line. The lures are the smallest i can find in white or chartruse or nitecrawlers and corn on size 8,10,12 hooks. hope this helps good luck

I agree, that setup is way overkill for bluegill. It sounds like they sold you a bass combo. I have the same setup I use for cats and bass in heavy cover.
Bluegills fight hard for their size, but they are not very big. What you need is a light or ultralight pole with around 6-8 pound test. The rod length is fine, but get something lighter.

That pole is a little heavy but will work at the pond. Just change out the line with 6lb. I suspect the line it came with is garbage anyway. Problem is if you go with a ultra light you'll have problems setting the hook. (my wife does and she's fished a lot) A lighter pole would be better but sticking with what you have covers 90% of the fishing in ID. Your friend will know how to rig and bait for BG but it will be small. They are shy fish so sneak up on them. We do good in the shady area at the discharge or in the NE corner. Good luck and have fun!!

Pick yourself up one of these if you want an ultralight but you're having a problem setting the hook:

I have an 8 footer that I use for panfishing and casting light rigs. Has enough backbone to set the hook, and at the same time is soft enough so that it won't rip the hook out of a crappie's mouth. I've landed cats up to 7 pounds on it, too. It's so sensitive you can feel every little peck and nibble.
Great rod for the price.
