Yesterday I took my new Madison boat out on the water for the very first time. I like the boat a lot.
One thing that I need to fix somehow is- when going
in " hi speeds" with the oars the boat just kinda
goes all over the place. Add a little wind to it and
it gets kinda hard to control to go straight.
I was thinking about some kinda rudder. Anyone played
with rudder on a toon? Any ideas are very welcome.[

What you want to try is a keel, and you want to see IF it helps and HOW BIG it has to be. Then a keel configured like a kick up rudder like you see on kayaks would probably be best so your draft is not affected.

Thats what I was looking at today on line-kick up rudder.
Hobie makes cool one for they kayaks that twist-n-stow.
Also the have a oversized "fin" for it.
I kinda like that one. I may have to look at one at the
Hobie dealer.
I was thinking of just temporary slap some plywood
or something on my toon just to see if it even helps.
Im very sure that someone must of done some rudder
on his/her toon.

I leave my wheel on and it seems to act like a rudder.
Since it's basically a small bmx bike fork/wheel, one idea would be to buy a used bmx bike for 10-20 dollars and a piece of plexi-glass from Home Depot. Instead of using the wheel, rotate the fork 90 degrees and mount the plexiglass to it. If it can't be pulled up high enough to beach it without hitting the bottom, you might be able to cut it and install some type of hinge. Of course you could probably do the same with PVC.
NFO sells one but it's no longer viewable on their site. It mounts in the same hole as the wheel but you can only have one or the other and it doesn' rotate up.

When I was floating the Castaic Lagoon I got in some
very heavy underwater weeds. I was not able to move at
all with the wheel in place. It took some very hard work
to get to shore and remove the wheel with about
50 lb of weeds on it.
After I removed the wheel it was so easy to get through
that underwater weed forest. I glided right over it.
So I need something that would flip up easy. Like a
kayak rudder or something like that.
Yes plexy would work just to try it out but not to go through the "kelp forest".
Btw- I love the fact that I can also for forward in
my toon. It is so cool.

If you're new to a 'toon, all it takes is PRACTICE! All I wanted when I first got my 'toon was a keel/rudder, but after a few days on the water, the straight tracking becomes second nature. Make sure to adjust your oars so the handles come pretty close together at mid-stroke. If you have them so they're wide it's harder to row evenly. You lose a little stroke length on the paddle end, but you gain control.
