I just got the okey dokey from the boss (wife) to let me drive back over to the Oregon coast this weekend and catch some tuna! I've never been able to try it, but it sounds like a blast!

Never heard of tuna fishing in Oregon, but what the heck. Why not! Post pics once you get back, would love to see them

Good luck. What does the SST show? How far out are you planning on running and from what port? I'm a bit jealous...I love TUNA fishing.

You will have a blast, I went a few years ago out of Westport, Wa. 50 miles out on a charter with 10 buddies, we caught over 160. I came home with over 130lbs of fillets. Fun fun fun.
Definitely a must do for anyone who hasn't done it yet. When the action hits it's nuts. Fish on everywhere and fish going everywhere. Makes me Smile just thinking about that trip.
And whatever you do, don't throw a fake rubber snake in the live bait tank. Captain almost threw me over board. But at least I made him scream like a girl first. lol

I just found the post I made from back then on this forum, it has some pictures in it also.

Well when you put it that way, you make it sound like lots of fun.

My only experience with tuna is from a can when I am low on money. Does the fresh fillets really taste that much better and different? I've been crabbing in the Westport harbor a few times and looked at all the charters, but didn't know if the bottom fish or tuna or some of the other choices would be better.

Personally fresh yellowfin tuna is the best tasting fish I've ever eaten. All 5 of us eating it after catching it in Cabo last year agreed. Comparing it to what comes out of a can is like comparing prime rib to spam. I'm jealous. Have a blast fishing for tuna.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I remembered somebody on here posting about it. Definitely encouraging! I'll certainly post pictures when we get back.

youll be catching albacore tuna. The kind that goes in the can. Still very good fresh, but its not yellowfin.

Last I heard so far this year the tuna are still way, way off the coast, like 100-150 miles out. Only a few been brought to the dock. That can change fast though. Id do some checking around before heading over.

oh trust me I've been watching it very closely over the last few months. They're in closer than that now and people are catching them already.

I've been watching that also, lots of fish being caught in Oregon. Where are you heading out of?

I fished Yellowfin out of Dutch Harbor AK in 1994 I think. Could have been +/- a year but they were 100 miles south of dutch. We caught some as close as 50 miles with our skiffs. We also caught some Pamfret off the beach that year. That being said I still do the San Diego thing for Tuna. Last few years of salmon fishing in WA we have bought some Albacore at the dock, $2 lb.. Tuna is a blast and anyone that has a chance to do needs too...[fishon][fishon][fishon][fishon][fishon]

Depoe Bay. My family was just over there last week and I was hoping to go tuna fishing then but they weren't in far enough quite yet.
The crazy thing is that my brother and I both have to work on Friday, so we're leaving after that, driving 8 hours, fishing saturday morning till whenever then driving back home 8 hours that night! It'll be crazy but that's the only way we could make it work and I'm pumped about it!

i was just down there out of newport but rockfishing and all the deck hands were pumped that the tuna fishing was getting close! they said that people really get hooked on tuna fishing. . pun inteded. hope to do it some day myself. good luck. sounds hecktic but really fun.

Well, I got back to Idaho at 0400 on Sunday morning! All I can say is WOW what a trip! If you haven't fished for tuna in oregon or washington go try it now!
Our day started out bright and early, and we had to motor out to the warm water about 30 miles out, which took a couple of hours. But as soon as we got there it got really silly really fast! To start the day off, the deck hand was getting the very first guy's line set at the right distance from the boat (or trying to), his line might have been in the water for 5 seconds at the most before a fish hit it! That should give you an indication of how fast and furious the action was! We ended up with 58 fish on board (I know not as good as EZOP's trip [Wink]). I landed 13 of them which was a kick in the pants.
We were trolling the whole time. I was hoping to be able to cast for some but trolling worked just fine. When somebody (or three or four people at once!) got a fish on while trolling the rest of us had to reel our jigs in so as not to tangle while people chased their fish around the boat. but I figured out that if I waited just a few seconds then tried to match the trolling speed as I reeled and as the boat slowed down I could frequently talk a fish into biting. This was by far my favorite way to get them because as I would reel my lure in it would skip across the surface and I could watch it. It was pretty cool to see a big blue lightning bolt come up and smack my lure 20 feet from me! It was like dry fly fishing or top water bass fishing but 10 times better!
Here's some pictures: (notice in the first one how the fish is trying to shake my arm off!)
