I noticed that although the side pockets of my Outcast Super Fat Cat are big. I had some trouble with the items in them being all scatered and I was also afraid of potential punctures.
So I bought myself for each pocket, two plastic containers (two because I could not find one the right size for the 17" L, 7" W, 4" H, Float Tube pocket).
Now it is a charm, except I have to remove the lid to access the items.
Any of you encountered the same situation, and what were your solutions, if any.

welcome and keep the questions coming and your ideas as well.
I use plano type lure boxes, some have adjustable compartments otheres don't. I usually have an idea of what I am going to use and need so I make sure they fit in the box or boxes. This also helps to have some organiztion and of course prevents punctures.
When I change lures it's nice to have a piece of foam or fur to hook the lure in I am going to use and then to hook the lure on after I have cut it off the line. Then whendone I can "safely" put things back in the container and then away in the pocket.
I have found it a great asset to have a hard apron like TD as showed us all. Having a firm "table" to land fish and change lures is great! I have taken magnetic stripping like is used on cars for advertizing or in tool boxes and double sticked it to the top to help hold hooks for a short time. I also have added some hard plastic bait boxes with lids to hold worm pieces and hooks I am not ready to put away.

Hope this helps

Does the lid come off? I mean, do you need the lid?
When I had my SFC and even the Echo, I used the plastic boxes ( the size of shoe boxes, and even cassette storage boxes. But I didn't have a lid...with the zip closure, I didn't need one.

There are plastic cups for small children's snacks which include a push through no remove slitted lid- munchkins or something like that. They may be a little small for what you have in mind, but they would keep things from spilling out together and having to be sorted out if you had no lid.

The lids do come off (similar to Tupperware containers, but more cheap. I keep the lids on, even if I have the zippers, because when you transport your Float-Tube by it's handle or with straps on your back, it pl;aces it in a vertical position, and items in the plastic containers (without the lids) could flip out and then get jammed around the containers and stray inside the side pocket.
Of course, using lures in these containers could get tangled themselves, since they donb't have internal seperated spots for individual lures like a Plano fishing container specifically made for fishing.

[cool][#0000ff]I have jockeyed a lot of different models of float tubes over the years and have experimented with many different ways to carry lures and tackle on board. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]My personal preference is not to have the largest boxes I can stuff into the pockets but to use smaller "trip boxes"...with trinkets sorted by what I anticipate using on the different waters I fish most. Of course, many of them are generic and contain different sizes and colors of the same type of item. It is a personal thing.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am attaching a few pics of some of the trip boxes I have taken pictures of...for whatever reasons. I have a whole large shelf in my tackletorium with a bunch of these boxes...for plastics, heads, spinners, crankbaits, etc. These are the Flambeau boxes that are about 5" X 9", with interchangeable plastic dividers that allow me to choose the size I want for specific lures or other items.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I use a marker to label some of the boxes...by type lures or an individual water assortment. One of the keys to to regularly go through the boxes to keep them stocked or to remove or exchange things as seasons progress or as you want to add new items. Periodically you have to do a major overhaul to clean up the messes you leave while in the heat of fishing and not paying attention to proper placement of goodies into their designated spots. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Works for me.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]PS...the pic in the middle is actually of a couple of the larger "organization" boxes in which I keep my primary supply...to fill in trip boxes as needed.[/#0000ff]

Wow, TD, you have more bling in there than a teenage girl's jewelery box! I almost had to put my sunglasses on just to open the pictures.[cool][cool]

Plano and Flambeau make boxes the same size that fit in the pockets. They have adjustable dividers. I also took one and made some small cuts in the two side/center dividers that does not move and now it holds several spinnerbaits.[cool]

Those are the size I use. I have both the plan and the flambeau. I find the Flanbeau can hold more than the plano due to the plano has shallower compartments in them. Like I mentioned earlier I used a dremel tool and cut about a 1/8" slot in the two center beams lengthwise and now I can put about 8 spinnerbaits in them for easier carriage. When not fishing I put them in a Cabelas gear bag to haul around and store. I have all my tubin stuff except flies in them. I also found that a small index card recipe box works well with velcro on it attached to the front of my pockets to hold bait bottles that can get messy. Keeps the goop from going all over the place and no mess to clean up later.

My bad...I thought you were talking one box in each side - the size of the soft pockets. To give the pockets some rigidity, so you could reach in and grab ONE lure of fly box with out the sides collapsing. Something you can put those Plano or whatever boxes in.
Like I said, I had one big plastic box for that reason, and IN that box I had several smaller fly boxes, plus extras like floatant, split shot, indicators...etc.
That is why I didn't understand the lid issue...the lure/fly boxes had their own lids.
My mistake.

[cool][#0000ff]I "customize" a few of my plastic lure boxes too. Almost impossible to buy new boxes that offer exactly the shape and size compartments you need for your lure selection. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]A Dremel, some cutting tools and some epoxy and you can make just about any configuration you want. Haven't tried it with PVC though.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Not sure whether that was a compliment or a criticism. I'll take it as a positive observation.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Speaking of which, I have also been knowed to tie up earrings and make decorative pins for family members and for female anglers or wives/girlfriends of fishing buddies. See attached.[/#0000ff]

wow, look at those pins ! Those are so cute .............
............I mean, yeah man those are nice in a very

I was just joking.
Maybe it is a fly fishing thing or maybe a girl thing. Sometimes I tie up these flashy, wild, wierd things ( hard to call them a fly when I tie something) which my husband says that in no way will a fish hit that, then when I manage to catch one on it he just shakes his head at the bling thing, so I rub it in! Bling does catch fish!
Your boxes are great, I wish that my stuff looked half as neat and tidy. I need more organization!

I agree about the pockets just letting things float around. I tried the shoe box but with the tube inflated I could not zip the pocket closed easily. The shoe box still let things just kind of float around. Then I remembered a post I saw on this site last year. The poster had used corrugated plastic to stiffen the pockets up and also put in dividers to keep the plano type boxes in place. I did mine this spring, mainly to keep my battery for the sonar in place, but it worked out really great for the other items I like to take along. The plus side to it is I gained some extra storage space buy having things in some kind of order. And the stiffer pockets make better arm rest
Attached are a couple of pictures of the install

Very NICE Paledun (love the name) That is what I was talking about..thanks and welcome!

Gee you sound like mamatrout when she wants a new lure. It has to be pretty.[:p]

It's a girl thing! Nothing wrong with pretty.
The more I fish for panfish and bass the flashier I get! I have a fly with a sparkly red body and chartreuse marabou tail that seems to be a semi- universal favorite. So far I have caught trout, bass, bluegills, perch, and crappie on it. What they take it for -- I have no idea. I think it must just be the shock factor. Their mouths drop open in awe as it goes by and they automatically get hooked. [laugh]
But then again I also tie what I call a "Ratty Dragon" which is about as ugly as you can get! So who knows, but pretty flies do catch fishermen.

I sensed that you were a FLASHER[laugh][laugh][laugh]
