I know this has been brought up before, but we really need to do something about the jack-A skiers on Newton. It gets worse every year I swear...

Its got to the point where I don't even like to take my boat out there because I know I'm gonna do more fighting with them than with the fish.

Yeah we can hold up our cameras and say we are taking pictures but half the boaters out there are just some punk teenagers who don't understand what your doing. I tried to confront one who nearly ran me over when he was loading the same time I was and he just started talking back being a smart-A trying to be cool in front of his friends so I blew it off and didn't bother telling him that I've got his numbers and was turning him in. (Maybe he'll think twice now when his dad yells at him for abusing the boat and not obeying the laws)

I know we've discussed this before, but it is to small of a lake for there to be that many boats flying around, it is unsafe and something has to be done... Anyone have any ideas on what we could do? A petition or anything?

Mike

(PS. Fished it from the bank last night but didn't have any success, waves crashing everywhere from the skiers and the water was way murky)

I tried to confront one who nearly hooked me when he was casting the same time I was loading and he just started talking back being a smart-A trying to be cool in front of his friends so I blew it off and didn't bother telling him that I've got his numbers and was turning him in. (Maybe he'll think twice now when his kids yells at him for abusing the rod and not obeying the laws)

I talked to a guy the other night who is from Newton. I brought this up - about the skiers ignoring whoever else is on the reservoir. His reply was that it was originally a boating lake and they need to get over it. I didn't care much for that reply. Newton, in my mind, is too small to water ski and stuff safely. And I do think that the law should be obeyed. At least the fisherman who know and care are doing the right thing about it. Thanks guys. Maybe one day it will be changed.

Way to be orignal PBH... Come up with that one on your own...[sly]

PBH - funny, but kinda ass-inine.

If the LAWS of boating are followed - there's not much chance of a fishing boat endangering a ski boat. But the reverse sure ain't true. (goes for lights at night too)

It's about SAFETY and SURVIVAL! People die every year on our waterways.

And some of the unregulated behavior out there goes beyond boating LAWS, to other LAWS, to just plain common sense - or lack thereof!
I watched as three teen-punks stood by the rope-swing and launched bottle rockets at skiers going by. And no - they were not anglers!

If the big wake-setters didn't seem to find such enjoyment in watching the panic as an angler's small boat or 'toon gets swamped and tossed by their close passage - the anglers wouldn't hold such resentment. Might find the friendly 'ol fishermen would wave with more than a single digit extended!

A co-worker with a big-wake-boarding boat was complaining about the Tubers - because they go in circles and mess up the wake for the skiiers/boarders - who prefer to go straight. So there's contention even amongst the "sport-boaters". Not to mention jetskiiers!

Maybe I'll start bringing a bow-setup. Oops - you're a skiier! Hell I thought you were just a big fat carp. Sorry kid - let me pull that big-barbed arrow out of your ass!

Fish On!

So what happens to someone that gets their numbers reported? Is it like calling Animal Patrol to get the neighbor's dog to stop barking outside ALL night long!

A few years ago I was hoping that the proposed dams thru Amalaga ( bear river barrens area west of Smithfield) would go thru- take all 3 and put salom courses on them, ski jumps -what ever- Skiers only - no fisherman. Then they would have a wonderful area to recreate and everyone would be happy- until some anglers started whining that they wanted to fish for the carp that were there.

Im with ya man. I really wish they would impose that certain days of the week are for fishing and certain days for water weenies. Newton is so dang narrow I can't believe people actually like wakeboarding there anyway. The fisherman way out numbered the boaters today though. I counted 14 boats for fishing and one waterskier, they didn't stand a chance. My suggestion to you is be on the water at 6 AM, this gives you 4-6 hours before they show up. This is my rule of thumb and it works pretty good.

WOW! Obviously you don't fish Newton to come up with a response like that, I hope you are joking. Spoiled rotten teenagers with Daddy's big boat don't need any defense, they need a black eye once in a while[pirate] morefishinplz speaks for all who fish at this tiny Reservoir.[fishin]

Im with you. If you are skiing too close to other boats then you and your boat should be kicked off the water for at least 30 days and a hefty fine for the first offense. One year for the second. Some girl was ran into this weekend on Jordanelle with a jet ski while on a jet ski. It's fun to be on the water when it's safe. I had a day on Deer Creek when trolling in 6 feet of water when an idiot pulling a wakeboarder went in between me and the shore, I'm guessing he was in 2-4 ft of water. If that skier would have fallen he could have been seriously injured, not to mention if he would have hit me in my boat which he was about 35 ft from. They need to have an iron fist when it comes to safety.

They need to do what prokpine does no wake perioud. Plus i can believe people ski in that lake don't they relize that logan city and farmers dumpded suage in that water ways for years. Plus its so narrow take the short drive over to bear lake!!!! I wouldn't water ski in that lake with a 10 foot pole[sly]

flyfishermen come up with the same gripe every year on the lower Provo River -- 'cept it's the recreational tubers/floaters/swimmers.

The problem with the line of thinking is that the waters are open to "recreation". Attempting to limit or define what recreation is allowed is a slippery slope to go down.

I'm not saying that Newton is big enough for both -- I have fished Newton numerous times. But, I could argue that Willard is just as bad with skiers and boaters.

We all need to be safe, whether we are anglers or boaters. We all need to be courteous. We all need to be grateful that the water owners allow any type of recreation at all!
