Looking to take an overnight backpacking trip on Monday-Tuesday. I would like to get into some fast brook trout fishing on any drainage but preferably within a 2-3 hour drive of SLC. I know of a lot of places, but some like Anchor Lake and Bald Lake may have stunted fish this year. Does anyone have any recommendations for trout in the 10-12 inch range? PM me if you would rather.
Thanks.

Murdock Basin has a few small lakes that have a lot of brookies in them. It's been years since I fished the lakes, but you may have some 10-12ers in them, if you dont mind the rough road (high-clearance required).

If you are looking for an easier place to reach via car...I would recommend Bonnie Lake, or Bud Lake, or unamed lake (depending on the map publisher). I have attached a map for your convenience.

THe bigger red circle is the main lake, and the smaller outlet (tail) lake. I have caught fish out of both, and if you follow the small outlet stream down, you will come to 2 different meadows with loads of small brookies in them.

The smaller red circle is the feeder stream. There are some decent sized ones if you start up near the head of the meadow, and work your way all the way to the main lake.

Park at the X (an unmarked pull-out), and hike down through the trees to the lake. There is not a trail, so you have to bushwack, but its a very short distance. If you come to the entrance to Camp Steiner, you have gone too far. Turn around and go back to that last big curve in the road...the pullout is on the south side of the road.

Brookieguy, this information should also help with your earlier PM to me.

Please remember to live by the "pack it in, pack it out" creed when visiting this isolated place.

There is also the vo that you can access at the soapstone turn off on mirror lake hwy. I haven't been up there for about a month, so i'm not entirely certain of how high and turbid the flows of runoff are right now; tho i am thinking that it should have subsided a bit by this late in the year...? When that flow slows, you can hook into some nice trout on a variety of methods. And, if memory serves me correctly, i don't think that area of the provo is restricted...Please, anyone correct me if i am wrong on that one tho!

Made the trip to Amethyst lake on Monday. Camped over night right next to the lake. Fishing was only fair during the daylight hours until the sun started fading. Then, the water was literally boiling with fish in the Northeast corner. We caught brookies on nearly every cast with small dry flies. Biggest was just under 13 inches (not bad for Amethyst). I will post pictures soon, the weather was great. If you're looking to take a trip up there, bring the repellent, the bugs were relentless.
