Fished Utah Lake yesterday with wannabefishen, smallfry_catin and his father Clarence.

Bird Island is almost no longer an island:

We caught some, and got reminded of the truth to the statement:

"Never leave fish to chase fish." I have found this is often more true than, "We are leaving a good place for a better place."

It was fun catching the cats again. Nothing huge today, with the largest going around 5 pounds. I thought that I would try for a large one by putting on a 7" whole minnow -- only to catch the smallest cat of the day on it![shocked]

It was nice meeting and fishing with three anglers I hadn't drowned a worm with previously.[Smile]

that was the best day of the year for us. nothing too big, but way fun. you have to telll us where to buy one of those magical bobbers [cool]... it was very fun to watch it disappear and then come back, and do it again a couple times.

that is very good proof that you never leave fish to chase them, cause we didn't find them[Smile]. the first spot was the best, and remained the best.

wannabefisher caught two good cats at the beginning, but somehow or another, he offended the fish gods, because he didn't catch a single one the rest of the day. although he missed a lot "mudcats[Smile]" it was still very fun to have him along.

thanks a lot for coming. it was great to have you along bringing all the quantity luck for me. thanks for all the fishing info you gave us. my dad says your very welcome to come fishing in our boat anytime.

Sounds like a fun outing, even if it was a little slow for the big ones. I bet it was hot out there, where is the picture of the 5 lber?

Wannebefishin has some pictures that hopefully, he will post. It got warm a few times, but most of the time there was a slight breeze and it wasn't too bad.

I like to fish near Bird Island. A lot of fish hang around that island. It is true that this year the water almost covers the entire island. As you know, you can't quickly drive your boat up to the part of the island that shows. If you do....there will be some "bills" to pay.

Did you use minnows the entire time or did you catch the kitties on anything else?

Yep, we saw a boat ding their prop while we were there.

I caught most of mine on minnows and a few on carp meat and crawlers. I tried some old chicken livers for awhile and got some bites but no hookups. Others were fishing carp meat, beef livers and crawlers. Many were also caught on crawlers. I was surprised that all cats caught on crawlers were channels and not a single mudder.

I missed lots of bites -- I believe I would have done better had I used larger hooks.

Were you there when all the Power Boats blasted across from Lincoln Beach to Pelican Bay?

Ya, it was a poker run sponsord by Nordic boats and AYL. We started out of Provo and hit Lincoln Beach, Pelican Bay, AF Harbor, Lindon and ended back at Provo. It was a fundraiser and will also be this weeks episode of AYL on channel 4 satuday 11pm. It was fun trying to run with the Big Power Boats, but my 55mph couldn't keep up with the guys doing 120mph[Wink]

120!! thats insane!! our boat probably tops out at 40. man thats crazy!

Yep, that was wild watching all of those boats go flying by. We were anchored up at Bird Island at the time. Although, we were miles away it was still loud.

Sounds like a fun trip! As you know, I only recently started fishing seriously (last 6 years or so), but back in the early 90's I actually had two places that were my "go to" fishing spots...when I went fishing, which was about 3 or 4 times per YEAR:
1. Current Creek for trout, usually with a borrowed fiberglass car top boat, or my rubber raft. We went for the CAMPING trip, and just fished cause we were there.
2. Bird Island, Utah Lake, for Catfish. In my friends 14' jon boat (yes, scary sometimes)

We would anchor off the west side of the island where there really is a deep spot. Shrimp was the go-to bait, on a bare hook with sliding sinkers and no bubble. We caught many a catfish...and lost a couple of poles as they were not locked into the rod holders! The average was about 3 or 4 lbs. if I remember correctly, but occcasionally one would catch a real lunker out there. We did that 2 summers in a row, primarily during the month of June. We stopped going when my friend sold his boat. I remember that you could tell you had a bite when the pole was doubled over going under the boat, still attached to the rod holder! good times!

My cousin and I have contemplated going out there again a few times, but we've never actually done it. Good to hear that you can still catch a fish there!

we have gone through the bird Island area and found a 24' hole! pretty crazy for that lake. I heard it is a hot spring but I don't know. that is where I caught my biggest cat.
