[#000000]It seems like My son Jacob and I just can’t seem to get together much this summer. He is 16 and has a job that mostly runs on the weekend. He asked for time off about a month ago and managed to get the weekend off by swapping days. Well since we had two days we decided to go to Brownlee.[/#000000]
[#000000]Jacob has several fishing poles but his sisters “Barbie” seems to be his favorite. This weekend Barbie came through for him in a BIG way.[/#000000]
[#000000]Saturday, we got to Brownlee and it was almost 10:00 am. We found a place to get to the river and we were soon unloaded, boats ready and we didn’t even bother with waders. We kicked from the Oregon side over to the Idaho side to a cove I had seen on Google earth. I got the first cat on cutbait in fact we got all the fish on cutbait. I got a little fella that was about the right size for dinner that night. After that first fish everything seems like a complete blur. Jacob was hooking up, I was hooking up. Jacob would have a double, and soon it was just a free for all. The bite fell off about 4:00 pm and we hooked the pontoons together with bungee cords and I towed us back to the truck. We kept 3 of the 25 fish we had caught that morning for dinner. It didn’t feel hot. We had a nice shade tree and 105 degree water to drink. I took off my wet shoes and socks sat down in a reclining lawn chair and passed out in the shade of the tree.[/#000000]
[#000000]After I came to we had a fish fry, and we headed out to see if we could do any good night fishing. We kicked along the shore on the Oregon side in about 30 foot of water. I went in a little close and picked up a good-sized cat. Jacob was going big; he put on the front half of a 10” mort. About 11:00 he got a nasty bite and about took the pole from his hands. He leaned hard into the hook set and started to reel. You could tell this freak show of a catfish was about to come up when the hook came out. Actually the hook was never “in” the fish. He had clamped down on the mort and held on until Jacob had him about up. Jacob had hooked the mort through the head and the hook was not out enough to stick the big cat. The wind came up and the fish would not bite, so we headed for the truck.[/#000000]
[#000000]Sunday, it was all I could do to get the boy up; he was dug in like a tick. After some prodding he was up and we were ready to head off for the Idaho side again. Again I hooked up the pontoons and headed off in high gear. The half-mile takes about 10 minutes to cover hooked together. We split up and I had the first fish on again. Jacob countered with a real nice cat of his own. Then I went wild and soon I had 9 fish landed and Jacob hooks a toad, on Barbie. For about an hour it was just a street fight. I needed a good cat trip and we got a great one. We ended up with 38 cats in just less than 18 hours fishing. We tried hard to hit the 40 mark but we ran out of time. If we would have landed some of the hard bites we lost we could have easily done it. [/#000000]
[#000000]My favorite cat rod is an ultra light. Jacob watched me land gobs of big cats on that ultra light. When he started to use Barbie for a cat rod I thought that was crazy. But for the same reasons I love my ultra light Jacob is quite successful with the little pink and blue rod. We had a great time. [#0000ff]Great report. Glad you could spend some quality time with your son and that the fishies came to play too.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Not sure about that Barbie rod. That might cause the boy some problems among his peer group if the word got out.[/#0000ff]

He might think about painting the Barbie pole. Maybe a nice three tone camo.

Awesome RON & Jacob. You two are the Siegfried & Roy of the Cats! (you decide who is Sieg and who is Roy...LOL)

I am betting Jacob would LOVE a fiberglass rod after seeing the bend in that Barbie pole.

FG that is FUNNY!! I got to tell him that one.
He has a perfectly good Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger fishing pole I got him for his 16th birthday. He says Barbie is lucky. He took Barbie on a 50 mile Boy scout hike in the mountains. He got razzed for that. Ron
