Anyone know of any hatcheries that would sell bass (LM, SM, maybe even wiper) in small quantities for private use?
It is my understanding that you need a license to either transport live fish, or keep non-sterile fish, but I don't think it requires a license to keep sterile fish in a private pond.
Anyone validate or dispute this?

To keep gamefish, your pond will need to be inspected by the DWR to make sure that escapement is not possible (along with some other criteria). Once you meet the requirements, you can be awarded a license to purchase and keep the fish.

Where can you actually buy bass? I would love to raise a dozen or so wipers, good food storage

My buddy got tired of all the work to keep the pond clean. He drained it last year.

The requirements and certifications are not a simple thing to gain. Then, once you have the necessary requirements complete, you'll have to find a source to purchase your fish. Depending on where your pond is, the State may limit the species that you will be certified to have in your pond.
there is a reason that this is not an easy (or cheap) thing to accomplish -- it's called bucket biology. The threat of the wrong fish making into public waters is simply too great.
If you are serious about this, then you need to stop chatting on the internet about it and pick up the phone. Call the UDWR.

This is true. I have a buddy w/ a pond in N Sanpete County. He now has tiger trout in it, but it took him months working with the DWR to get it done (the OK to plant fish plus getting the fish themselves). They had to check it out (what creek, if any, did the water flow in to, was it deep enough for winter survival, etc).

I guess finding a source to purchase the fish, bass particularly, is what I'm really trying to find out.

Please take a look at the following link. I believe it has all the information that a person would need to find a health approved source of fish that could be stocked into a private pond.

It really scares the hell out of me to hear some of the board members recommending collecting fish from an uncertified source and moving those fish illegally into a private pond. This type of activity leads to no good. There are a number of parasites that live in bass and you very well could be transporting those parasites to your private pond. Not to mention it is illegal and after all the damage that has been done statewide with "bucket biology" in a number of waters it is still an issue and still discussed openly in a public forum.
This fall and winter the DWR is going to explore increasing the penalties for moving live fish. There are three main items that are being looked at.
1. Include transportation in the law so anyone transporting live fish can be prosecuted not only those caught stocking live fish.
2. Include restitution for the damage and reclamation to the resource (water body). If someone is found guilty of say stocking walleye in Red Fleet Reservoir they can be prosecuted for the cost of removing all the walleye from the Reservoir.
3. Include a substantial reward that will make it worth while for a person to turn in the guilty individual.

The mentality of many members of this site truly scares the hell out of me.
Unfortunately, this site has a continued history of promoting illegal activities in Utah, such as transporting live fish. It's just plain too bad.

I forgot perhaps the most important item that we are going to try to address in regards to illegal fish movement. There is a 13 state alliance that works together to uphold legal judgments from one state in all the other members of the alliance. The DWR will work to make sure that fishing license revocation is a penalty for illegal fish movement and stocking. This would mean that you would not only lose your fishing license in Utah but in all the surrounding states as well.

Its only illegal when we do it. The DWR can do all the crappy, ill managed, dollar wasting planting they want. I remember when I was a kid, I would bring home 3 inch mudcats I caught and put them in the horse trough as pets. Now they would probably shoot me on site for it! But the only good reason for the fish to leave a lake is to go to a dinner plate[fishin].

What truly scares me are statements like you just made, how do you figure this site has a history of promoting illegal activities? This site has nothing to do with any members decision to do anything illegal and BFT DOES NOT PROMOTE ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES.
