Is trolling deep the only way to catch kokanee? Will they take thing else like jigs or other bait??

If your fishing at the Gorge, use buzz bombers or wedding rings.

I was thinking strawberry

When using wedding rings and buzz bombs does one still need a downrigger? or will these get low enough without?

You can get deep enough using leaded line, or dipsy divers, in line weights.

"You can't catch fish where the fish aren't". Or so the saying goes. If you can find the kokes shallow you can cast or troll any standard koke fare and catch them. I usually find them shallower just as the sun starts to rise before it's high in the sky. I use a variety of lures including but not limited to kroc's, needlefish, wedding rings, cripple lures etc.
I like orange, pink, purple and green on silver or gold for color. Small rapalas can be deadly on kokes at times. But if the fish go deep so must you if you want kokes for dinner.[sly]

How deep are kokanee on average this time of year? I know you said they go shallower in the morning. so what range are they at?

Vertical jigging Buzz Bombs will catch Kokanee.
As others have already said though, you must find the fish.
At The Gorge, 2 weeks ago, they were about 25' to 30' deep and last weekend at Porcupine, ther were over 40' deep. A good fish finder will help you mark the fish and also show your Buzz Bomb as you jig it.

Strawberry will fish the same and you will also catch Trout on the Buzz Bombs there.

So launch from the south marina and head back to the narrows for the Koke's?

That's how we did it.
We fished the triangle first though.

So what is the triangle?

I hear if you draw a line from the marina to haws point and then over to the island and back to the marina you can find some. I have always had better luck on the soldier creek side. On a side note I get skunked more than I actually have trips where I catch kokanee.
This is from another thread but explains the triangle.
