My sister is in town from North Carolina and she has been asking me to fry her some fish. I had the day off from work today and I figured a fish fry plus a much needed time away from work was a good reason to go fishing. I launched my tube from Lindon Boat Harbor and threw small plastics into the white bass boils for fun. Last year around this time that boils produced those teeny bait stealers that can be turned into catfish bait. This year the bait stealers were as long as my hand. I don't know if this is last year's young or this year's. I'm thinking last year's but I'm not sure and I have no picture to show for it.
I have been wanting to fish the reeds north and south of Lindon for quite some time. Flipped a coin...went north. I was dragging bait on the bottom for quite a while with no takers as I made my way to the reed line. I decided to reel in the bait rod and put a bobber on it just for the heck of it. My other rod that I had ready was rigged for ultralight. I was hoping to get into some bluegill in the reeds.
I decided bluegill wouldn't be the catch of the day when my bobber sank like a rock. Cool, kitty numero uno. It thrashed me pretty good and tied an awful knot in my bait rod's line. Ok, put that one down. Pick up ultralight. Blam. Another kitty. Had to put on a new hook. In fact, after putting on new hooks after the next 3 cats, I decided I would catch catfish and stop trying to use tiny long shank wire hooks. I break out the Gamakatsu's in red and continue to harass the cats.
About the time that I started getting hungry, the wind started to blow a little bit and the power squadron was starting to show up. Had a couple of guys try to sneak up on me to see what I was doing. Luckily the cats were smart and waited until the dudes sped away before it took the bait again. I had a limit and then some so I kept releasing any I caught at that point. As I kicked back to the harbor, I said to myself, "I sure would like to catch one more." There was a small pocket of reeds to my right so I pitched my bait in there. I looked over my shoulder at an oncoming boat, it turned, and line started coming off the reel. Funny how even the small kitties are . This guy was only a 14 incher so I let him swim.
I had an absolute blast and took home a limit of fine cookie cutter channel cats. I don't know how you could crawl up in those reeds without a tube or toon. I really was grateful that BigFishTaco convinced me to get a tube and that TubeDude totally pimped out my ride. Thanks again yall.
