I am new to the area and was thinking about doing some fishing in the Government Wash area..........I will be fishing off shore, so was wondering if it is a good area and what I can expect to be biting.........also if there are any good LMB spots in that area........thanks.

gvmt wash is a fine area. There are plenty of lmb and striper to be had there. You might try getting there at dawn or dusk and put some work in. I once caught a 6lb largemouth from shore in goverment wash. This was years ago when the launch ramp was still up. I actually saw the bass at the surface of the water from the top of the hill and snuck down and threw a spinner out past him and bam he hit it. I reeled about 10' before he snagged himself in some weeds and I had to swim out and grab him in about 10 feet of water. lolololol

During this time of year I Iike to use lures that appeal to both lmb and striper. Usually a shad colored reaction bait in the 2"-6" range. I like fishing points and drop offs, sandy flat bottom coves and stepped ledges.

Im not much of a bait fisherman, but you can always chum an area up and just draw the stripers and cats in using cut baits like anchovie and sardine. Some guys here have some good techniques with cut bait.

[cool]Hey dherout1125, welcome to the board. Government wash is a good place to fish. If you aren't going to bait fish, make yourself mobile. The stripers have been boiling there but every so often. The boils have been close to shore so reaching them with a long cast is possible. Like vegaskid said, use a shad imitating lure either soft plastic or hardbait but one that you can cast some distance. You should be able to chase down some of the boils if you carry lures in a fannypack. I fish from a floattube and can sometimes chase them down. Remember that a boil is like an iceberg. What you see above water is alot smaller than beneath.Good luck!

Thanks guys, I am going out at bout day break sometime this weekend, so we'll see! Yeah I am not much of a bait fisherman either. I am used to Illinois lakes and ponds.....LMB eat up spinner baits like who dunnit in the mid-west! Thanks again for the info and happy fishin!
