I'm gonna meet my parents up at Lost Lake between Cambridge & Council this weekend.

Anybody heard how the fishing has been? I'll be taking my float tube and fly rod. Maybe a spinning rod for a "Plan B"[Wink]

I'm assuming you're talking about Lost Valley Res. north of Council. No haven't heard anything since this spring. I was even asking a few guys from that area last week about it and they didn't know either. Good luck and let us know how you did.

Yes that would be the one.

I'll let you all know how I did.

This was one of 3 stops on a fishing excursion in some of my old stomping grounds. Lost Valley Reservior near New Meadows has been a very good trout fishery for years and I found it as good as I remember.

We got on the water at about 5:30am. The surface temp was 68° and it was reading around 60° at 15 to 20'.

This water is known for some sizeable Kamloop hybrids as well as good catches of Rainbows. We began with the tired and true Stayner Ducktails on sink tip lines. We began working the south shore weed lines (over the old river bed before it was a reservior). We both had fish on by the second cast. It went on this way for the next 5 hours. We had at least 25 fish apiece and another 5 or so hooked and lost. We only caught a few over 20" on this trip with most of the fish in the 17 to 19" range. We saw a couple of other fishermen catch a few in the 25 to 30 inch range.

Tight Lines!

If you tie flies at all the Stayner Ducktail is one of the easiest ones to tie. I believe it is an old Marve Taylor pattern if you want to google it.

I was up there today. I was going to fish the reservoir but got kind of a late start and I liked the look of the creek that comes out of the dam so I fished that instead. It was brushy and not a lot of access points but I caught a bunch of small rainbows and brookies and it was a lot of fun. I'm going to get out of bed tomorrow and fish the reservoir from a tube. It sure is a pretty lake. I'll let you know how I did.

Yeah I don't tie anymore. I learned when I was 10 yrs old. My brother owned a fly shop for 15 years so he just gave me what I needed & my fly tying just kinda faded away......

The stayner is super easy thats for sure. Marv probably tied it but it was invented by a guy by the name of Stayner from the Idaho Falls area I have always been told.

Thanks! Were you using flies? I'll be up there tommorow. I'm leaving at 5:00PM after work. Maybe I'll see you up there. I will be in a '06 white Ford F-150 and fishing out of a red & silver float tube.

I found more info on Google:

Quote:[i]Stayner Ducktail

This streamer pattern was developed in the 1920's by Ruel Stayner in Idaho and was originally designed to take perch in the many excellent stillwater fisheries around his home area. Ruel owned and operated a sporting goods store down the street from our own Dick Bonamarte's motel in Twin Falls, Idaho. According to Dick, the Stayner Ducktail not only caught perch but "ripped their lips" on the large trout of Magic Reservoir and Henry's Lake. Between the 1950's and the 1980's, Stillwater enthusiasts like Ruel from Idaho developed a number of effective fly patterns for arid-country reservoirs on which they popularized the use of float tubes. Guys like Ruel, Dick, and Marv Taylor were just a few of many anglers that made up the early Idaho Float Tube Navy, as Dick calls it. We can thank these "pioneers of the pond" for many of the stillwater float tube patterns and techniques we enjoy today.

I am 53 years old and remember the early float tube days. My dad was one of the early "Idaho Float Tube Navy" and had me & my brother out in float tubes in the mid 1960's. My first float tube was and old "Tucker Tube". A real small canvas covered tube. While I have a pontoon boat I still really prefer fishing from the old round float tubes. They are just so comfortable & really nostalgic for me. I'll be using an old "Bagmaker" round tube this weekend!

That is very interesting. I love the story of your early tubing. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I got up there early this morning and caught two 12-14" rainbows, one on stayner ducktail and one on a red leech. I was using #3 sinking line. I quit fishing for trout when I got into some perch because my family & I love perch. I brought home about 20 so we are having a fish fry tonight. They weren't real big. I was in a tube in the cove by the dam. I won't be there anymore this weekend so sorry I'll miss you. Have fun.
