Yesterday I got to fish with my friend Eric. It was
a very nice day. Low temp about 84F. Water temp in
upper 70s. Low wind. Few beers...........
We thought that it maybe a good idea to mix things up
a little.
So we went to Bass Pro Shops the day before and got
some non fly fishing stuff. Spinners, Robo worms and
stuff like that.
Started the day with FF for bass/panfish as normally
we would for nothing. Ok fine, lets try some white
spinner, BUM nice bass about 14''.
How about some Robo worms on drop shot
which was totally new to me. I connected with 4 bass
and landed 2. Not bad for first time a thought.
Well anyways, I just thought I share.

[cool][#0000ff]Fishing with something besides flyrods does not make you a bad person. It is both legal and productive at times.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Some of my best friends use lures and even bait. I do too. It has not stunted my growth.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]By the way, that "small bass" would look much bigger if you "creatively" positioned it next to the right kind of ruler. I thought you had already learned that.[/#0000ff]

you sinful sinful man... going with no ff gear.. shame on you... [laugh]

Ha,ha,ha. That is so funny TD, and I happen to agree with you.

FF doesn't make you a bad person either, but it requires more free time and a higher $ price for admission....

To each his own.

So, you are saying Spinning/Bait/Lures is cheaper?[:p]
Hummm
More free time? don't get that one.[crazy]

Tying your own flys takes time as does getting really good at casting and finding the prefect setup without obstructions. Lures last a long time for me and I carry a retriever, should the need arise. What is the cost of entry level QUALITY FF rod, reel and outfit compared to spinning? I would rather allocate to another pontoon, but thats just me.

None of my business telling anyone how to allocate resources or enjoy our short life on this planet, nor was that meant in any way..... I don't even care if I catch fish, and practice release, though I could hold my own against a FF. Recreation is not my source of income, so I have to do what I can with alloted resources available for recreation.

Nice way of looking at life.
There are many out there that make their own lures, dig their own worms just like there are allot of FF that BUY their flies.
I glanced at some Rapalas while at SM......[shocked] I would hate to loose one of them.

Fly Fishing can be as inexpensive as you want, just like spinning, bait, lure.
OR you can spend a small fortune on either.

That is all I meant. Just a tool and how you use it is up to you. FF is not a special tool, just a choice.

I do agree that to be GOOD at ff, you need to put in time, but that time can be an earn as you learn too.

Great Job Pete....nice to know you can catch them no matter what...LOL

Funny how big a deal it can be to cross each other's lines. I have really wanted to try a bass bug or frog pattern lately at my local spot, but don't think my lone 5wt. will cut it.

Very productive day I would say. No problem mixing the fly gear and bait gear. If you look at my setup most of the time I have a nice mix of bait casters, fly rods, and spinning rods.[cool]

Your 5wt should be just fine for bass up to 14-16 inch.
Just make sure that he does not get into some weeds
and such.
I have cought nice size SMB and LMB on my Sage 3wt
as well without any big problems.
Now, if you get lets say a 16lb bass on 5wt, well good
luck...............[Smile]

Hope this helps

Yes, I have seen pictures of your ride (and got many
good ideas from it, thank you) and I like the mixing
of fishing gear.
Im glad that my toon has big pockets and huge rear
deck so I can take some extra stuff.
I can also get a "water trailer" so I can take even more stuff................[crazy]

I am starting to max out on mine. I have added one more rod holder for 4 rods. Gives me the ability to carry 10 rods and also want to add another rod holder for fishing so that I can use two rods there. Right now I have only one holder for active fishing. I know 10 rods is crazy but ya gotta love it.[:p]
[signature]
That will definitely get you noticed[crazy]

I would think the size of bass is a big factor, but the weed beds they live in and the size of bugs would determine the rod. A stiff rod with a good back bone. 9' wouldn't be the best choice either.
Sage and Redington manufacture some killer specialty rods. Redington is a reasonable price as well.
Allot of people are making the Sage Bass their main stick. Scadden uses one allot.

Well at least I know that I will have the gear I want when I want it.[laugh] Now I need to get a new fly fishing reel for my 9 foot 5wt fly rod and get a new spinning rod and reel. The reel I was going to use on the new rod decided to break on my last trip[:/]. Also need two to three baitcast reels for the rods I do have now.[Smile] Yes I have an addiction.[angelic] But at least it keeps me off the streets at night.[sly]

[cool]Actually looking at it, I can probably take 13 rods with me, but that is overdoing it no?[:p] I mainly made the new rack to carry baitcasters on lake powell with me but it doesn't mean I can't use it on other waters.[laugh]
