Spent the day exploring the area around Satan Lake in the Seven Devils Mts. This is an absolutely spectacular drive for people that like the high backcountry.

I found what looked like a magnificent unnamed lake on Google Earth, so I hiked into it. I had a pole with me, but there were no fish.

The hike to Satan lake is about 1 mile, but there is no "official" trail. The lake is stocked with Cutts only, and many fish were present. Most of the jumpers were in the 6 - 8 inch range, but I saw several cruising the shore in the 12+ range.

I got plenty of bites on the various lures I used, but failed to land any! I'm sure a flyfisherman would have cleaned up handily.

I fished the various streams on the drive out and caught / released a zillion small rainbows and brookies (attached)

This is an absolutely phenominal area for those backpackers out there!

Thanks for the report. Looks like a beautiful area. There are still many places that I haven't had a chance to visit that are on my list.

Wow, that is really a nice looking area! Thanks for sharing. I love hiking into the high mt lakes, but I am having a hard time making the time this year! I'll just have to pick a date and just do it. So many to choose from!!

About 60 miles NW of Council. The first 30 miles are paved, to the town of Bear. The road is pretty rough and ends at Black Lake. Black Lake is the Southern Portal to the Seven Devils. The Northern portal is near the town of Riggins.

I came around a corner on this road yesterday and there was a black bear in the middle of the road! By the time I had my camera out, he had lumbered off into the brush. Very exiting.
Here's some other Satan Lake info:
