I am a little late in posting but man I have been busy. My friend Dan and I went to SFCR on Friday. We launched at 6:45 am. We were finding a Bass here and there and I was getting a lot of perch. Walleyes were just not there and we just couldn't find them. About 10:00 the weather was getting real bad. Clouds were moving in and the wind was getting bad. We were a LONG way from the truck so we moved close to shore and we were talking about what to do. All of a sudden a Lightning bolt shot down into a canyon to the south west of us about a mile or so. The thunder was so loud my ears rang afterwards. I just happened to be looking right in the very area it hit. I couldn't see it touch the ground but I knew it did. a few minutes later the clouds moved on and the wind got a little stronger. I look over my shoulder and smoke was boiling up right where I saw the lightning hit. My truck was parked on the east side of the lake so I was not worried about my truck so we fished. It was over 2 hours before the fire crews showed up. The wind blew the flames up the side of the mountain. It was an amazing sight. The planes and helicopter were buzzing. The choppers were dipping water from the lake about at big bay or Goose Island it was hard to tell where we were. After we were done fishing we stopped at the boat check station. We talked to the guy working there and he said he saw some people in a White ford pickup around the area where the fire started. I told him I saw the lightning hit that area. The Saturday Paper had a small report and said it was man made. I know for a fact what we saw, and we saw lightning.
I am going to call BLM on Monday and let them know.
We ended the day with a lot of bass and I got 8 keeper perch. Fishing was ok but the fire took out a lot of deer, elk, and chukar areas I used to go to[:/]. Ron

I am glad that you and your vehicle were not endangered. Wow it must have really burned alot. Where did it start, around goose island? I have been busy getting our rental house ready this weekend so I haven't been down there.

Wonder where the eye's went? It seems like maybe we might have some better ice fishing for perch this year.[fishin]

The fire was almost straight south of goose island. a couple of miles. It burned up hill and headed for China Mountain. I also would like to know where the eyes went. Some guys are saying deep. I used a worm harness and bottom bouncer to hit it a little deeper with NO luck. I did hit perch when I did that so I stuck with it. I am going to bet that ice fishermen will be doing good on perch. I plan on hitting it early for spawning perch next spring. Ron

Wow! That is an interesting day of fishing. Hopefully the BLM will believe an eye witness account. I wonder what made them think it was man made?

Well last Sat I found all of mine right there at goose island. I had heard that early in the spring at the time of spawn there were some real nice perch and crappie being caught. Now those crappie are sure elusive or very tight-liped throughout the day. I have never found them to cooperate as well as they do at CJ.

Wow headed for China Mtn, scarry, might be good arrowhead hunting.

They eyes are still there north of goose in about 17 ft. of water, pulled a limit out today. When I pulled in to Greys at 5:15 this morning I could see a couple of hot spots still burning on the hill and after daylight a couple of choppers started bucketing water onto them[fishin]

Scott, what were you using on them? Ron

Seems that the last 2 times i have fished there I have done my best slow trolling Shad Raps and crawdad crank baits. Pulled in 4 pretty nice perch trolling too. Probably my last fish trip for a while cause my deer hunt opens next week and I'm excited.

Were you on the bottom or are they suspending?

Running my lures about 12-13 ft. deep in 15-17 ft. of water. Seems like the broken backs worked best
