Hello all -- got a couple of questions for you guys. Just getting into fishing and I really don't know where to start. The amount of reels, rods, tackle, etc available out there is a little overwhelming -- went to Bass Pro today and bought something, but I don't know if it's what I need or what. Unfortunately, the help I rec'd at Bass Pro was about worthless -- they didn't seem to know any more than I do which isn't saying a whole lot.

Anyway, I'm going to be primarily shore fishing. As a kid, I usually had one pole in the water tight lining for catfish and another pole bobber fishing/throwing a plastic worm around catching bass and panfish.

What equipment should I be looking at to do the above? I'm assuming I'll need at least two rod/reel setups? Forgive my ignorance, any help will be appreciated.

I bought the following today:

Shimano Sienna 1000RD

and

Ugly Stik 6'6" Medium Action

Is this ok? Should I take it back and get something else?

Thanks again all, appreciate the help.

Welcome to the site! Hope we can help you out. You have opened a can of worms you know that don't ya? There are so many different opinions out there for what is good and what is bad. You have started out on the right foot already. Get some basic terminal tackle supplies such as hooks, line, sinkers, swivels etc.. then look at the types of baits you think will work. For plastics such as worms get some bullet weights and offset worm hooks for some texas rigging. A good set of circle hooks for the catfishin. Hope this helps.

P.S. with the dip bait it's good if you keep it on ice (it's like wax)

for line I suggest stren original is green 10 or 12 pound or cajun red cast 10 or 12 pond

for weights I suggest 1/4-1 oz

this is a good rig

Are you only planning on cat fishing?

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with Ugly Stick, and Shimano has a good reputation. Until you get back into it and find out what you might like long term, this set up will probably serve you really well. Get some line that will support / survive your fishing habitat and the size of fish you expect to encounter.
