Looking to take my five year old nephew on a guided steelhead trip this fall. Looking for suggestions on place and guide and the best time to go. know of great places on the coast but haven't been in Idaho long enough to know about here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've heard good stuff about The Guide Shop in orofino...if that's the area you will be fishing. If you are traveling from far away make sure you call them about the best fishing days...they are really good about letting you know if the fishing is good or not..

good luck

The best Guides on the Clearwater in my opinion is Jeff Jarrett or Jim Carter and are Jarrets guide service in Orofino.

They do drift boats and Jim Carter will do motorized sled.......But a drift boat experience is second to none.

They will do right by you! Tell them Gene sent you!

Good call Gene, both of them (Jeff Jarrett and Jim Carter) are working motorized trips through Reeltime Fishing in Lewiston as well (in addition to doing their own drift boat trips), Toby Wyatt's the outfitter. Catch and Release season goes through October 15th, then the keep season starts. I suggest the end of October for your trip, and I would look at going with Jeff, Jim or one of the Reeltime guides. If they are all booked, Jason Jim McCarthy, or Doug Richert at Hell's Canyon Sportfishing are also excellent guides, and good guys as well.

In my opinion, Jim Carter is the man on the Clearwater.

Gene and Joe are spot-on with their comments. For clarifcation....

Jeff Jarret's Guide Service, [Jeff is the outfitter] Orofino - drift boat trips, Jeff and Jim Carter guides

Reeltime Guide Service, Clarkston [Toby Wyatte, Outfitter] - jet sled trips, Jeff Jarret and Jim Carter guides, also Toby is an outstanding guide as well. Drift boat trips also available.

Hells Canyon Sportfishing, Lewiston [Jason Schultz outfitter] - jet sled trips, Doug Richert, Jim McCarthey and Jason guides

There are other guides associated with these outfits but these are the cream of the crop and in my opinion Jim Carter comes out on top.

Waters covered in that area include the Clearwater and Snake Rivers. If it were me, I'd be going after the world famous Clearwater B-run steelhead.

Hope this is helpful in making your plans.

look at hell's canyon and look up Jim Mc Carthy. one of the best fishing guide's I have ever fished with. the guide shop kind of fell apart afetr they lost Jim but Evalin is a great women and has some good guide's still but a guy named kip is probly ther best guide.

Everyone that posted has good suggestions; however, the operating words you used are "five year old nephew". That being the case, and you want the little guy to have fun, I would take him during the catch and release season. There are very few boats on the water and you will catch fish. An additional plus is the weather is typically warm.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far. They have been extremely helpful in narrowing down a time and guide. Although it is a while out i thought i should get on it now since i promised to take him on a trip and want it to be a good experience
