Well, made it up to Island Park this last Tuesday and did some fishing on the river. Put in at the base of the IP dam floating through box canyon and through Harriman park taking out at the Osborne Bridge. The box took a little figuring out, but once we did I found that they liked copper johns about a foot below a brown rubber leg under a thing-a-bobber. They would also strike at a stonefly pattern close to shore but had a hard time committing to it for a hook set. Through Last chance we saw some fish rising near shore, but had the wrong gear on. At the end of that stretch we switched to streamers and I managed to land a nice 16" rainbow. Through harriman the wind kicked up, the fish stopped all activity and we didn't get another hit until we anchored just past Osborne bridge before the take out. My brother in law managed two really good strikes, one that he just missed the hook set and a 2nd that snapped his leader. Beautiful day but I would skip the Harriman stretch and really pick apart the box section instead.

Thanks for the report! The Box section is just fun fishing while the Last Chance through the Harriman is very technical and usually best fished with dries or subsurface flies.

Glad you had a good time in the box canyon. It is really a great place in there. I haven't been back since I wrecked my canoe a couple of years ago. I broke my hand in three places. I threw my son on top of the canoe and held the canoe steady as I got ripped through the rapids. The rocks bashed my hand as I was trying to keep the canoe steady. Not good memories, but a good learning lesson. Not all canoes are created equal. I had floated it a couple of times in a small agile river canoe with no problem. My 17' 1" lake canoe just was not fast enough. Anyway I digress... Thanks for the report.
