Went fishing with Steelfisher at Ririe yesterday. We started by fishing with our flyrods on the way to our destination. We did catch a few on the fly rod and that was a lot of fun. Then we switched to the spin and baitcaster rods and tried about everything in our arsenal. We caught some on spinner baits, tube baits, drop shot, senkos, and crankbaits. However, all of them were small. We tried big jigs in deep water hoping we could find something bigger.

I love the conviencence of Ririe, but I am getting frusterated by the lack of decent size smallmouth. We celebrate when we get a 12"er.

Has anyone caught a legitimate 15-16er" this year? We have caught literally hundreds of smallmouth and tried everything we know, but haven't seen a single fish over about 13". Last year I caught a 14"er and the year before that a 16"er.

Is everyone keeping the bass once they get to the legal 12" mark?

Sounds like a good day even though you did not find any big fish. I need to give that a try some day. I would love to catch some bass for a change.

I actually haven't caught any smallmouth out of Ririe this year in three trips out...it's kind of weird. I guess they don't like the soft plastics I use.

What kind of soft plastics usually work up there?

From shore baby bass colored senkos or Maniac sticks with a charturuse tip would work good.

From the boat you can catch plenty of fish on pumpkin colored grubs or tube baits.

It looks like we need to learn how to catch the bigger fish. We probably should fish deeper to avoid the little guys closer to shore. Any idea what the winning team fished to catch the bigger fish in the tournament?

Ya, we have donated our share of gear to the deep water rocks. These results are very interesting. It does show that there are at least a few big ones left.
