Hello-
I am new to the forum, just recently found out about this great resource. I am from Twin Falls and love flyfishing, I was actually a guide in Alaska 4 summers and currently work at the local steelhead hatchery.
My question is- a co-worker and I are floating the South Fork canyon section in a couple weeks, can anyone offer any info on any hazards to watch for, any preferred campgrounds, recommended shuttles, etc. We are set on fly selection, unless there is a super fly that is a South Fork special, then my ears are wide open.
We will be taking out at Byington. We have 3 days to float, does that sound reasonable to spend in the canyon section?

Welcome to BFT. I would use Julies shuttle service. That is the one I have heard the best reports on.

Three days should be fine. I think some people do it in two days.

I've mostly heard of people doing a hard one day trip through the canyon to byington, but often heard of the overnight trips as well. A 3 day outing would be awesome, allowing plenty of time to really work it over! Not sure where the campsites are exactly but I'm sure the forest service could tell you or even give you maps of them. The one thing I found last week for getting fish to hit was get really close to the brush and banks.

I would use julies shuttle. As far as any hazards that section of river is pretty mellow If you have some experience on the oars you will be fine. 3 days in the canyon would be awesome I have only done day trips. I don't know if you can reserve campsites but if you can I would do it it can be a very busy. let us know how it go's when you get back.

So I was thinking it might be a better idea to may be spend two days in the canyon and float on down about 10 more miles past Byington. We just want to try to utilize our time best, and I've heard that there is bigger browns populations down in the lower area.
My buddy and I have quite a bit experience between the oars, but as far as the diversion dams are concerned, you just need to stay on the opposite side of the river right? Are there any braids we need to stay away from? I can probably get this info from the outfitters in Swan Valley (and I'll get one of their maps), but it sounds like there are a good number of guys on here with alot of experience on the river.
