I'm not sure how I managed to make it this long fishing as much as I have without catching a carp. I've seen a bunch and I've even tried to snag them which believe it or not I failed at [shocked]. This afternoon I decided that today was the day. I went and bought a can of corn and some wheaties, and put on my game face.
I got to the Hell's Canyon Marina with a couple hours of daylight left and tried some "nobler" methods for a while to no avail, then decided it was time to bight the bullet and dround some dough balls and corn.
Incidentally my wife had my car with my appropriate size fishing poles in it, so all I had was an ultra light spinning rod.
Of course it didn't take that long before I had my first nibble. I set the hook and the fish took off for the other side of the marina. I had light line so I couldn't put too much pressure on him. I got down to where I could see the spool and only had around 15 or 20 yard of line left on it so I started to thumb it gently. somehow my line held, and soon I tired it out.
It certainly wasn't the biggest carp, but I thought it was pretty cool, and definitely fun to catch. It was big enough that my daughter was scared of it, so that counts for something right?
Next item on the agenda: catch one on the fly!

Cool, now you can add another species to your list.

It is amazing to me how it is so easy to catch different fish by accident, but when you try for a specific type they are suddenly extinct!

right on! thats too cool. I caught my first carp earlier this spring in blackfoot on the snake. i was drifting minnows and BAM! the thing took off in the current i thought i had a huge brown on being how i was using minnows, but nope, a i5 pound carp gave up and turned into a loge after awhile and let me pull him in. fun but at the same time dissapointed wasnt a big brown. I think ill mountem anyway[Wink]

My wife caught a monster on a hot dog this summer.

Now try it with an 8', 8 1/2' or 9' rod in a 6, 7, or 8 weight, floating line, 7' 0x to 3x leader and a #12 fly.
The only smell on your hands is the mud and fish..[Wink]

That is the plan. I got my 8 weight temple fork rod mostly for that purpose. I have a type 2 line and a floating line for it. I don't know if I will get down where the carp are this fall, but next spring I will be using it on the carp for sure.

While we're on the topic, do you have to sight cast to them, or do you sometimes blind cast. I ask because I'm fishing in a marina, not mud flats or something more conducive. I can sometimes see them but more often I can't, though both times I went there I had my kids with so I couldn't really do any stalking.

On the river I sight fish. And while at Utah Lake, I just cast over a boil so to speak, but at Starvation, I just cast out and stripped it in (Using a Type II line).
As any fish, it is fun to sight fish (why dry flies are so popular[laugh]) but not always available.

Thanks! I'll give it a try!
