I have been thinking about buying a new camera for fishing and hunting pictures but I am having trouble chooseing one. I live out in the sticks and only go to town every 2-3 months so checking them out at a store is hard for me. What does everyone here use?
I just want a regular point and shoot with perferably a 10x zoom. I don't care about good video or anything I just want the best pictures possible. Being waterproof or resistant would be a big plus for fishing. My budget is around 2-300 dollars. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I had a old Sony cyber-shot 4mp camera that took great pictures but a bear ate that one.

I got the Kodak Play Sport:
http://www.top30deals.com/Home-and-Garde...bAodJ0afDA
But I did get it for the HD video and the youtube capability. It is a regular camera as will, but there is no Macro for those up close pictures.
It is the size of my Samsung touch screen phone and very easy to use. You can shoot pictures or movie underwater.
For the price is is very cool. Plug right into the HDMI of my 55 inch TV and WOW!
My avatar is the underwater.

Our daughter owns a safari company in Kenya and Tanzania, and was in need of a quality camera to use for nature pics on the safaris. We researched it a lot, and decided on the Panasonic Lumix Z26 at Costco. It has 12X optical zoom, 16X intelligent zoom, a big 3"LCD, 12 megapixels, leather carrying case and all the bells and whistles, for $269. On Aug. 28th the current sale goes off Costco.com and the price increases by $20. This is one of the most highly rated point and shoots. She reports that she loves it. Attached is one of her latest pictures. Mike

I'm using a Fuji Finepix FD20. It's older though and I can't find any more of them on the market, but a few of their newer models have been great that my family has bought! Great battery life, compact and mine has taken quite a beating! All under $200. The next ones I'd recomend are the cannon Powershot series. My mother in law has one and it takes pretty good pics.

Olympus Stylus, they are around a hundred bucks at Costco, and they are waterproof, shockproof, heat and cold resistant, and shoot great pix...

I'm with Mojo. I use a camera every day for work and take thousands of photos a year. I'm hard on equipment and the Olympic Stylus 500 is the toughest little camera I've ever used.

I have the Stylus too. Plus the Cannon Power Shot. I love the Cannon although not waterproof, but you can get an adaptor ring and use different lenses like the big cameras. I got the Polorized lenz which is a must for water shots.
The Stylus, I think it is hard to hold and shoot with one hand. I hit all sorts of buttons on it.
Check out the features of that Kodak....for the price. Oh and mine was under $100. on Amazon.

I'm with Mike on this one. I've been a devoted Nikon user for the past several years and didn't think that there was any better point and shoot camera out there that wasn't a Nikon. After conducting some research, I just recently purchased a Panasonic LX3 for right at 400 bucks and couldn't be happier. It has a ton of features that make using it extremely easy, particularly the intelligent auto setting. Here's a couple of pics from earlier this week that I downsized considerably to post. The image file size that the camera operates with under normal conditions (while adjustable) is by default quite large. I particularly like the 16:9 format considering it fits the size and general layout of my monitor. The format is also something that's easy to adjust based on the switch being built right into the lens. I think that in general, you probably can't go wrong with choosing Olympus, Nikon or Canon either but I've been more than happy with the results from the Panasonic thus far.
Just a note on the Bull Trout picture, after reading an earlier post I just wanted to demonstrate to how easy it can be to get pics of Bull Trout without ever removing them from the water. I wonder if there's any consideration or studies being conducted to consider possibly de-listing them as an endangered species. I've gone up to the S. Fork of the Boise 3 times this summer and caught and safely released several Bull Trout during each trip. The best day was when I caught and released 8 during 3 hours of fishing so it seems that the population is fairly healthy in that river at least. I probably would never keep one anyway but was kind of wondering what determines when they're no longer considered an endangered species. My guess is that there's more of them than there are wolves [

Paying $400 for a P&S camera I would hope it was a good one[

I have a friend that has one and it does take great pictures.
For that price, don't forget the Canon G 11. Another great camera.

That BT picture could be even better with a Polorized lens...can you put lenses/filters on it?

Flygoddess,
There is a polarizing filter available but you also have to purchase an adapter to fit it to the lens.
On a separate note, the BT picture you posted is amazing. I've seen quite a few BT over the years from different river systems but never have seen one in what I can only assume is spawning colors like that one was. Just wanted to mention that is one excellent photo!
On an even more unrelated note, I saw your post on possibly changing the season at Henry's and the possibility you might have to take up ice fishing. Based on what I've seen you post in the past I don't doubt your expert level casting prowess one bit but I thought it might be sort of difficult to make a good presentation into that little hole in the ice [

The Panasonic is a decent camera. I just sold my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K and upgraded to a Cannon 7D. Big difference and not something I take out fishing with me. When I hunt or go fishing I take the old Sony 5 MB with me. That camera has to be almost ten years old and has always been reliable. It just keeps on going and I like that it takes AA batteries. I also just won a Kodak Easy Share C19012MB camera, but not to impressed with it so far and the LCD screen messes up at times. So far I think I like Cannon and Sony the best with Kodak in last place.

Thank you very much westslopecutt...My hubby is the purist, but I can see ice fishing.
I needed an adaptor with my Canon also, but the Polorized filter and several other special effects lenses are awesome.
But, the post was for a WATERPROOF. I have had the Optio and now the Kodak. The Kodak with HI-DEF is a great underwater MOVIE or STILL LIFE and the software is super easy.

Another option is find a camera you like and then get a waterproof case for it. There are tons of cases on the market for P&S cameras so you can use them underwater.

I have a Olympus Stylus tough 6000. I like the camera a lot. It does some things better than others, and some things not as good. I am sure that most of the time when a picture does not come out it is my fault for not changing a setting. If I am doing outside pictures and then go inside I need to make changes. If I don't I find my self thinking I should have taken the time to make the changes. When I got the camera I wanted Water proof, Freeze proof, shock proof / drop proof.
I wish it had the option to put in AA batteries. I also wish the lens was in a different place. I do end up with a lot of fingers in pictures when I ask someone to take a picture. When I get it right it works well. When I don't it is not that great. Would I buy it again? Yes I would. This is my second olympus and I do like it. I am sure that there are others that do better but this one works. The pictures I am adding are just point and shoot. I think they look good. My son has a cannon of some sort. It takes great pictures. He won't take it in his boat most of the time because he is scared to get it wet. I have mine hooked to the " oar cam " all the time on my pontoon. Ron

I have one of the waterproof bags for one of my cameras. Not cheap and they can be a pain. You have to remove the camera to change settings in most cases and the are awkward...just my feelings.
Great idea on someones part.
