North Hero, VT - The Northern Lake Champlain Advisory Committee (NLCAC) couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day on which to host the 9th International Northern Lake Coalition "Future of the Lake" event Saturday, August 14th, 2010. This year, Governor Jim Douglas was on hand as the NLCAC awarded Lake Champlain International's Executive Director, James Ehlers, the prestigious Northern Lake Champlain Clean and Clear Award.
"James Ehlers is truly an advocate for Lake Champlain with his relentlessness in attracting private and public funds for Lake Champlain," said Larry Dupont, Vice Chair of NLCAC. "He also uses the resources and clout of LCI to increase their own internal attention and public's attention on water quality issues and fisheries issues, and has become one of the critical driving forces behind the successful lamprey program."
Just as the award description reads, this honor is bestowed in celebration of the leadership, commitment, and vision of those who help restore and preserve Vermont's great natural resource; Northern Lake Champlain.
"It is indeed an honor to accept this award on behalf of my board and my staff," James Ehlers said. "This award represents a total team effort at LCI to ensure a swimmable, drinkable, fishable Lake Champlain. Thank you. And thank you, NLCAC, for your unwavering commitment to a healthier Lake Champlain. Your dedication is inspirational."
During the annual event, there was food, educational displays, and a Kids Fishing Derby hosted by NLCAC and Lake Champlain International, Inc. There were a number of representatives from government agencies and elected officials present, including Governor Douglas, who also received an award from NLCAC. They spoke on the condition of the lake, its fisheries, and opened the floor for attendees to voice their questions, opinions, and concerns about Lake Champlain.
