Luck was on our side Saturday morning. The wind blew steady and strong from the southwest which was in our faces all day, keeping our scent away from the deer. We saw 14 bucks, most of which were bigger bucks. This one was the biggest we saw though. We also saw four cow elk that were nice enough to wander close enough to this buck’s bed to get him to stand up so we could see him. When he laid back down again, all you could see were the tips of his antlers. We crawled/slid within 50 yards of him and waited for him to stand up. After about 45 mins, he did. He slowly fed down through the jack pines and brush towards my hunting buddy. If the buck continued on that path, my buddy would shoot him at about 10 to 15 yards. The buck turned and started to feed up the mountain instead. He went behind a tree so I ranged him. Forty yards. I drew back my bow and he took two steps. I let the arrow fly. It looked like a solid hit, but you always have doubts. He bounded out of there and came straight at me. He saw me as I went to grab another arrow and veered straight at my buddy. My buddy shot a desperation arrow and missed. We could see a piece of red flesh hanging out behind and underneath his right front leg. There was a really solid blood trail. He made it about 100 yards before laying in a bed and expiring.

He is just under 26” a solid 4x4 with a little cheater on his right side. Has good eye guards too. Boned him out and threw him in my pack. It just about killed me getting him off the mountain.

Congrats to you on a fine Buck. From the looks of the country you were in, you should have seen some goats or sheep up there.

Yeah, we were up where the billy goats like to hang out. This was the first time I have seen elk up that high. Usually they stay down lower in the pines and quakies. Always seems like a good idea to go up that high once you see big bucks, but trying to come down is always killer.
