Fished the south fork between byington up too the side channels above Lufkin flats Monday and Thursday afternoon and evenings. For fly fisherman that are willing to work slow and “hunt” a hole and side channel the fishing is great right now. Fish seem to be pretty leader shy as they usually get this time of year. There are 3 strong hatches that start coming off about 3ish. There is a big mayfly hatch that’s about a size 12, light colors would match it but I wouldn’t waste time with it right now, it didn’t seem like many fish were keyed in on them. There is a decent amount of caddis rolling off and you can throw a size 14 & 16 elk hair and you can pull fish in on it but I found earlier in the day throwing an adams size 18 matched the gnats on the water and seemed to catch more fish on the adams. After about 530 to 6 the fishing starts to get really good, more fish working the surface. After 6 I switched over and started throwing caddis and pulled in some nice fish. Big fish of the day Monday was a 17in cutty ( got broke off on a couple bigger fish) and Thurs I pulled in a couple of cuts in the 19 in range. Left the camera in a car that was in UT so no pics this week. Should get out a couple of nights this week before school starts and hopefully its just as good this week as last week.
Had my brother that doesn’t fish call and want to come up Friday so I took him out to birch creek and If anyone is a beginning fly chucker now is a great time to hit a birch and hone your skills before you go up to the big rivers we have. First time he has fished all year and prob the 3rd time he has chucked flys in the last 5 years and he stopped counting at 82 fish in just over 5 hours. Now nothing was big, we are talking 6 to 10 inchers but it is great action to keep a noobie excited about flys and fishing. If you head that way 18s and 16s in caddis patterns and also renegades is all you need to take.

Thanks for the report. I do love birch creek. I need to get my kids out there. It makes them feel like big time fly fishermen.

Anytime, Only thing I feel bad for is the drift boat guys that cant stick around as late as we can. Those side channels come alive the hour before dark!

Also I can't stress the need of for stealthy wading enough right now. Creep up on holes and rifles and you will see the fish rolling in the seams. Get sloppy and splash into them and all you will see the torpedos headed to the deep water.

Thanks for the report! I am hoping to get out a few nights myself before my semester starts. I am hoping to spend a few days out with the wife in Island Park area and maybe hit Birch Creek and Warm River.
