Ok, here is one.............. my toon trailer has some surface
rust on it in some spots ( just like every trailer does).
I will park it in the garage when not in use. Should I even
worry about it ?
Is there a easy way to fix it ? I really don't want to be stripping the hole thing and painting..........
Thank you in advance .

I fixed your post cause I had no idea what surface "rush" was...hope you don't mind[Wink]
Our trailers have a little rust, we don't worry about it, but if you have spare time maybe take a wire wheel and some spray Primer then spray paint. Just focus on one rusty spot at a time.

Thank you for fixing my " rush" [blush].
The rust is not that bad. It is in some spots only. Considering that it "never" rains in SoCal and the trailer
with boat is going to be in my garage all the time I may
not even worry about it for now. But thank you anyways.

I have installed outdoor carpet over the wood floor because the wood had many sharp splinters.
Also redid wheel ball bearing and new tires.

New LED lights are coming soon.........

Anything alse you can think of that I should look at ?

That ain't bad...I wouldn't worry about it.
You have the side rails, but we went with the floor mount rings. The are clean and snug.

We also had several ratchet tie downs break so we went with this style:

Heck is NRS supports this style, they must be the best...LOL

I think you are right Peter.. that rust is minor... maybe one weekend when you are bored out of your skull and have a half day to hit it all with a brush, primer, and paint... only time Ive ever seen anyone worry is if the rust has gotten to seams, welds, etc and it is affect the structural integrity of the whole frame...

Sound good you guys. Thank you.
FG-thank you for the pics as always.

Loctite Make a rust neutralizer called Extend you might check that out.

Get the rust now that it's minimal. You don't want it to cause cancer and further damage your trailer and be more of a pain to deal with. Get some POR-15 and stop it while your ahead.

They aren't like cars. It doesn't spread like that. We have a trailer that has allot more rust than that and it is out in the Utah elements year round. Sure the tin metal fenders are getting thin, but the harden steel frame is fine...surface rust.

I agree to keep an eye on it and as Mac said, if really board, but it is nothing that require immediate attention.

Man you would freak if you saw may trailers....[laugh][laugh]

Your right it isnt like car's I work on car's and restore them and that's what I was thinking about while reading it. I would still clean it up especially with that new carpet he layed, gotta get everything to look good together.[Wink]

That POR-15 looks like a good stuff. Not cheap but
good.
Thank you

You are so right. I even painted one of my trailers the same color as my Blazer...LOL
Trailers are tuff though. No matter how much you baby them. I guess it is because they don't get the same primer and paint as cars
[signature]
Most trailers dont get any primer I was told. Just paint [:/]

Does a car frame get primer and painted.....basically the same thing, right?
[signature]
actually a most frames of a car do get a coat of rust resistent paint...

in the case of a frame like this.. I still say unless it is rusting at weld joints where the structural integrity would be put into question I would not worry about surface rust like on peters frame...

the reason I say primer then paint is that once the rust is cleaned off you use a primer as a rust inhibitor as well as a means of bonding the paint to the frame.. generally.. if you dont use a primer.. and paint on bare metal.. the paint will peel/bubble and you end up with another rust problem...

at least thats what we did in the Navy.. [fishin]

Factory car's get like and undercoating on the frame to prevent rust. Someone restoring there car or painting there frame then yes it does get primer and paint just like a paint job on a car would or powder coated. A trailer probly get's a lil coat of primer and most likely single stage paint job's.

You are right if you just use paint over the area you cleaned off the rust will come back. If you get down to the bare metal then use etching primer then the epoxy primer and that should be fine to work as a sealer then paint it, if you don't then the rust will also come back. So either way primer is necessary.

If I do anything with the rust I will prime for sure. If someone is going to put all that work into it may as
well do it the right way..............
Do it only once and not four times.......right?

Correct. Let us know how it goes.

exacty amigo.. if it is light surface rust you may get a jump on it with naval jelly.. then a good cleaning down to bare metal..coat of pimer then paint.. you may want to look at a good rust preventing paint similar to rustoleum....

if you have the time soon so that i doest get bad which would mean more work later...
