I don't get too much time to get out steelhead fishing, but I managed to fanagle about two hours of daylight this evening. So I headed to Lewiston, and got to Camp Cabin and Home at around 4:30 bought two spoons, and set out to try my luck. I got down to the river a few minutes later and started chucking my gear.
I'm not that good of a steelhead fisherman, so I honestly wasn't expecting to catch anything, which made my surprise all the more when, during my 5th or 6th cast, my arm suddenly swung up and set the hook into what felt like a monster fish! I fought this fish for three or four minutes, then it made a run and started shaking it's head hard. My spoon pulled free and I was needless to say. When I reeled in I found that the hook (a single siwash that I had put on in the place of the traditional treble) had somehow worked itself loose and come off [mad][mad]
So I fixed the problem and resumed casting. I was even more shocked when half way through my swing my arm did it's hook setting trick again! This battle only lasted about half a second however before my line broke. That fish decided that it would be funny to jump twice right in front of me after he broke off, just to show me how huge he was [:/][:/][pirate].
Not three or four casts later I hooked a rock and lost my second (and last) lure. So I sprinted back to my car and by 5:00 I was back at Camp Cabin and Home. The clerk looked at me pretty funny but was understanding when I told her my story.
In 10 minutes I was back fishing again, but my luck had slowed (and by slowed I mean I only hooked one more in the hour and a half I had left).
At about 5:45 I finally got a good solid corner-of-the-mouth set into a hatchery hen probably around 33 or so inches long. The thing was, I'm almost positive she was the smallest fish I hooked tonight, but I guess that's fishing.
