CARPINTERIA BEACH, Calif. (October 14, 2010) – Calm surf and an incredibly sunny day helped to make the 2nd annual “No Motor” fishing tournament an event to remember. More than 70 people crowded the beach to test their skills at some kayak and surf fishing, followed by an incredible beach barbeque. Head chefs Jason and Jaime Diamond of Stardust sport boat fame did an awesome job grilling their award winning burgers, topping off a productive morning.
“This year’s calm conditions favored the kayakers as an abundance of kelp salad made the surf fishing tough for those who stayed ashore,” said Jenny Armstrong, The Sportfishing Conservancy’s conservation officer. “Whether fly-fishing or using conventional tackle, shore anglers had their hands and lines full with wads of sea grass, a byproduct of the past week’s earlier wind and waves,” she added.
This year’s overall winner, Alan Ching, didn’t have to paddle far to score his winning total of surf perch. The rest of the leader board looked like this:
Grand Prize/Overall Winner - Alan Ching (conventional)
Conventional Division
1st- Alan Ching
2nd- Edgar Candia
3rd - Nick Palyvus
Fly Fishing Division
1st - Robert Shuler
2nd - Bob Gradias
3rd - Chuck Hunt
Fishing lines were in at 7:00 a.m. and out by 11:00 a.m., but the real lines queued up as Jason and Jaime, along with the Carpinteria Sport Fishing Club had hungry contestants lined up for award winning cheese burgers (Jason’s burgers featured on the “Stardust” have been voted Best in Santa Barbara!). It was an awesome day on the beach with great prizes for successful and lucky anglers. Paddle Sports and Ocean Kayaks gave away an awesome fishing kayak to the “No Motor” champion with rods, reels, a Florida trip and gear for other winners. Special thanks go out to the Carpinteria Sport Fishing Club and Eric Rangel and “the Artful Angler” fly fishing shop on Santa Claus Lane in Carpinteria.
