I thought I'd report in that the fish in the lower Snake River (I fish Homedale to Swan Falls) are still feeding heavily. The major problem is the high water flushing lots of grass down the river. I have had several big number days fishing for smallmouth, and have caught a couple of interesting "picture fish". This one, caught yesterday, was the most interesting:

This fish was only 16.5" long but it had a 14" girth and weighed 2 pounds 15 oz. I have never seen such a fat smallmouth. It put up a terrific fight.

Earlier this week I hooked a 20+ Rainbow trout on a Fluke bait, but it got off on a jump. A couple of weeks ago I caught a channel cat that probably went 15 pounds on a plastic worm. However, the toughest fight went to this carp that took the same set up as that fat smallie.

That carp drug me all over the river before I landed it. It was 36" long and must have weighed over 25 pounds.

Just remember that there are duck hunters out now, and go fishing in the afternoon. Wear a life jacket as the river gets dangerous as it gets colder. Water temps are now the upper 50s or lower 60s.

That smallie must have some bluegill in him!

Carp can fight unbelievably hard. They seem to have reserves of energy and just don't know when to quit.

thanks smartweed i always enjoy your picks and stories from a part of the river i haven't fished much. i wish fall was 6 months long.hard to go fishing and hunting at the same time !

WOW! I've never seen a smallie like that. That would make a beautiful replica mount being as it is so unusual looking.

Thanks. Sometimes I wish I lived closer to good smallmouth water. Of course if I did I would wish I lived closer to good trout water.[cool]
