I was all fired up to hit Pineview for a first try. Snoozed thru a few wakeup calls, then stopped to grab fresh worms, and some spin-snaps. The guy at the counter talked me outa Pineview, and I ended up heading for Newton. Figured it was closer, been there done that - so know what to expect. Got up there in time to hit launch about the crack of 8:30. Sun was just creaping over the mountains, semi overcast - hazy skies. Air was a cool 46 degrees, water was chilly.
Ok, so the water's like even lower that the low I saw back 'bout a month ago. Slowly back down past the launch that goes nowhere - a bit of slip and slide - figure - I'll just push the dang boat in. Slope was steeper than before. Pretty well fell off the trailer into the water. Off'n'Away!
Not much on the finder as I skooched across the main bay. Signs of basslings flip-flopping in the shallows. Headed out to Perch Point. Ramps gone. Lots and lots of bassling flippering abouts. Tried finding the perch underneath. Picked up some dinker basslets, and then got onto some perch. Eventually got onto some more perch - even a chunky monkey! Pitching a pink jig-head with worm tippin. Tried various gulpy worms, wacky, straight rigged. Drop-shot ... to hit deep.
Moved up lake and saw school after shcool of bassling along shores - again. Kept trying to work for the bigger daddios a little deeper. Lots of musky swipes around the middle of the lake. Mostly along shore - could see them working their way up a shore, or "whale" arching through the schools farther out. Had some lures rigged for musky hunting. Tossed some poppers, then some cranks - but didn't get any takes. Pitched right into some wakes. Saw plenty of the stripy monsters all day. Got real warm mid day - sunny, warm, not much wind. Later in the afternoon - wind had been ripping through the trees, then found it's way to the lake by later afternoon. Lots of red in the mountains.
Hooked up lots and lots of little basslets. Some really put up a surprising fight - several times I thought - Ok - Here's big brother - only, not. Then as I rounded my low water mark I got into more perch. Then I got a thud instead of a tap-tap. It didn't move, didn't budge... thump - tug a brick. Hmm - ok, it's taller - must be a bass. Surprise! Papermouth on board! So I figure maybe I'm onto something. Schwing around, and git it again, - hoping, little bro joins the game. BadaBing! Crappie Cove!
Cruised back toward the main area - trolling sideplaners along shore. No takes. Hit the cover along perch point. Spotted some deeper "spots" on radar. Deep dropped a few offerings. Kept getting caught up with mini bass. Worked back to launch, and picked up a last perch and bass, just because. Unloaded most gear from the boat. Managed to get the tip of the trailer in. Never have hauled that long a strech with the trailer crank, and such a steep angle. Meant to snapshop it. Like Batman climbing up a building face!
Quite a number of pumpkins floating abouts the waters. Not sure what that's all about. Carp'd eat 'em. Don't know about musky...
Round of fillet practice - and throw together a bit of spice and flour. Quick dip in wine/lemon juice - then flour mix. Wrap up for the night. Batter and fry tomorrow! Great day to be out. Fun to get on some fish. Glad to get the boat out without putting the truck in! May be my last boat trip to Newton this season! (at least solo).
