Well, let's just say that this one did not go down the way Charly and I had envisioned it. He had gone out "just for fun" last week and whacked a 15lb sack of magnum spots. Then in practice he gets bit by 2 keeper smallies on back-to-back casts! I expected to spend the day culling shad-engorged bass that would bite anything in their feeding frenzies...
Our first stop was the weedline known for holding 19"+ smallies...it was DEAD, lol. No surface action except for the occasional bust just to mock us. We fished the crap out of it and pulled a 3lbr and a solid keeper, both on 10" worms. We then gambled on a run upriver and and found the same thing...no schooling??? Picked up another solid keeper on the blade and then decided it was time to change our gameplan and run downriver.
We spent the rest of the afternoon fishing the transition where grass in 4 - 6 feet of water met the shallows in back of coves. Managed our 4th keeper, a beat up 17"er, on a blade at our 1st stop. At the next cove I get thumped hard on the worm and haul water emoBang ..cast again and another swing-n-miss. Charly throws and whacks a fat 4lbr, our best fish and we finally had a limit emoParty . Both of us were a bit down and finally limiting was a big boost, lol. At our last stop we managed one cull for an upgrade of a pound or so and that was it...time to head in.
With only 13lbs, we expected to finish in the middle half and go home broke, lol. Thankfully, many of you had a suckier day than us emoPoke. Thanks to all who participated, organized and donated for an excellent year...looking forward to the next one.
