Fished Hemenway and Hole 33 with no luck. The lake was slow for me. Anyone else have similar reports or am I using the wrong stuff?

I did connect with a big bass but lost him on retrieval. Seems like all the stripers have disappeared, maybe to another area of the lake?

i don't know if the lake is slowing down or not, could be the cold front we are in right now, but i have noticed a lull in bites even using live shad, not even a bite, i've been out every weekend for the last 4 weeks and only able to get into some dinks with the largest being 8", using chrome castmasters and lil cleos. 2 weeks ago seen a guy come down with 15 nice 2-5lb stripers, and a few smallmouths to clean. he got them from the same shore i was fishing using live shad, and last weekend i seen a guy with a nice 3 or 4 lbr caught on the bottom with chovies. i think its just hit and miss, i'm sure the weather is a big factor too. and the last few weeks i have not seen any boils myself....

In my opinion yes not to much action my last trip oct 23.

I thought stripers like rainy/stormy weather?

striper are supposed to love stormy weather. they are built for harsh water conditions, and nasty water conditions disorients baitfish as well, which is easy pickens for dem striper. dont know the truth to that cause im never out in stormy conditions haha

love me some striper! ToW~

I have noticed the surface activity seemed way slower this year than in the past. I went to the lake every saturday from June until now and have seen only one large sustained boil that lasted over 10 minutes. I remember seeing huge boils in the past that would last for sometimes almost an hour and then just chasing them around.

I hope it doesn't get as slow as willow hahahahahha [Smile]

I'm wondering if the threadfin shad populations are down because of the decrease in open water due to level droppage. I read that waynes words link that Iamthesmf posted and it says threadfin are openwater baitfish. Seems like the striper would have an easier time corralling them in a smaller space. That might explain the decrease in observed boils.

We have low shad numbers because of low water levels, but not due to a lack of open water - there is still plenty of that - but due to a lack of shoreline cover. Shad spawn in shallow coves with vegetation and other structure / cover. With dropping water levels, shoreline structure, and spawning areas are diminished, resulting in a weak shad population that year. We have been faced with continual dropping water, and this has hurt our baitfish considerably.

On the other hand, the fishing hasn't been too bad as of late. Just fewer boils this summer. The fall may see more action.
I saw quite a few schools of shad in the backs of coves 2 weeks ago when I launched out of Callville. Lots of bass corraling the shad. Gonna go back and try for bass in a couple days. Im draggin' Sil out, so there will be lots of bass abducted for pictures.

Here are a few fish I tangled with the other day - I launched out of Hemmenway and fished the Islands for about an hour and a half tossin crankbaits.

That makes even more sense. Thanks Whizzle. More pics! haha dang puters!

Question about Mohave...
The same Waynes Words article mentions that for the last 5 years there have been no shad in Mohave. When I was out at Cottonwood I saw a lot of minnows near the launch but they didn't look like bluegill, shad or anything I recognized. Any idea what they are?

nice lgmouth. [fishin]

Makes sense the boils have been weak and short this year. Ive spoted quite a few exposed dryed up weedbeds around 33hole but I also spoted some submerged beds aswell.

Looking down on the drop light the Gizzard shad looks like a minnow from above. They are not very wide across their backs.

I have seen 3 different baits under the lights Threadfins, Gizzards an something around 1/2" swimming around.

Nice LMB. I'll be headin out to the shoreline soon to redeem my poor performance last week.

this is the biggest guy i caught last week outside of callville on a bon chovie dipped in my special rub.. 18 inch
