Okay, in Henderson right at Stephanie and 215 there used to be a gravel pit. About 4 years ago while digging, one of Las Vegas's many underground aquifers was struck, and the pit filled with fresh water. Since that time I have always wanted it to be a fishing pond - About a year and a half ago, I dropped some channel cats in there, and recently saw bass boats on it!! If anyone is interested, I want to try and convince the land owner of making a city pond out of it.

I used to live right there at Stephanie and Wigwam, and I was there when it filled up. I took a few hikes down around it to try to find out if there were fish in there. I never saw anything, and just figured it would dry up soon. Im surprised it is still there. I bet that landowner could bank on that spot if he made it a pay lake like they have in CA.

I wonder if there are fish in there. I won't be the first guy to try it. The locals in the mobile home park next door will probably be laughing at the guy trying to fish it.

I used to work for the City of Henderson's Parks and Rec marketing department, and at that time (2008) there were plans to make that whole former gravel pit a park, but everyone I talked to said nothing about fish stocking.
Hopefully they change their minds on that, but who knows.

Thanks for the info! I hope they do turn it into another fishing hole. Now, I'm alot more interested in the potential of another urban pond at this location. Seems like it might be a nicer place than sunset being that it is partially fed by a natural water source.

They'd starve to death unless you included bluegill and minnows. What does the structure of this quarry look like? Typical rock quarry? How deep?

i would imagine at least a few people have emptied their fish tanks into it, there is probably some small tropical fish swimmin around, and not to mention lizards, ducklings, frogs, and insects, i would imagine there is something to eat in there. and not to forget the channel cats ihuntforfish dumped in a year and a half ago. they may have spawned, hmmm never know. shoot, toss a bucket of shad in there and see what happens lol.

Well, it's not going to do a ton of good to load it with fish if we can't get the property owner to allow us to stroll in there with rod and reel...
If anyone can find the number of someone in charge of that project, I will call and petition them to allow stocking and fishing. Im a great salesman - maybe we can accomplish something.

I work at a physical therapy clinic in the office building on wigwam just off the corner of stephanie. Its a three story building and we're in the corner suite on the second floor with a great view of that body of water. There have been all kinds of guesses as to how it came about (no one seems to know for sure) but I did hear from a patient of ours, a pretty credible source since he is a political figure, that the only reason the city doesn't want people swimming in it or to put fish in it is because it has high levels of perchlorate. For those who remember the PEPCON factory explosion in 1988, perchlorate was one of the main chemicals involved. So...I guess the city was trying to prevent you from catching and eating a three eyed fish, or something of the like if it had the chance to live in that water for any length of time. [

Ah, Pepcon... Reminds me of the good ol days. My 16 ft Four Winns was sitting in my driveway, and the blast threw it into my garage. Through the garage door. My house was only a mile or so from the explosions. Luckily, it was a beautiful day, and we had all of the windows in the house open. If not, they would have all shattered. I was at Edna Hinman Elementary when it happened, and it rocked me.

well I can tell you the channel cats u dropped in there are reproducing!! I was down there just today with the family to feed the ducks and there was a school of at least 100 tiny (1") catfish swimming right in the shallows. I could have netted them if I had an aquarium net, that pond Looks like it would be a great place to create another fishing opportunity! lots of shore access, great reed cover, deep drop offs, and it looks deep in parts. and much bigger than any of the ponds we have to fish in. just thought I'd let u know there are fish in there, and wonder how big those cats are now. Since the cats were put in roughly four years ago, there could be some sizeable fish in there. From quick googling it seems their optimum growing temp is 85, which that pond probably is near for a decent portion of the year. Add to that no competition for food, with cats being able to grow from 6 inches to 1.5 lbs in roughly 9 months, there are probably some decent sized kitties in there, barring any widespread disease they may have incurred.
