Friday night I decided to try and get out one more time to fish for steelhead. I made a couple of phone calls and found a friend that was able to get away for the day. We left Saturday morning at 4:00 AM and drove down below Shoup. When we got to the area we wanted to fish we were disappointed to talk to a couple of guys that were leaving and reported that the fishing had been slow for the past few days. We went down to the river and started fishing and after three or four of hours of seeing no one catching any steelhead we started to think it might be one of those days that we were going to get skunked.

Then the fish gods Smiled on us and we started to pick up fish. It was not fast and furious just a fish here and a fish there. We ended up with eight fish, we each caught four steelhead. Three of the fish were over 30 inches. Maybe I should say two were over 30 because one fish that I caught was a wild one that I released and my friend caught the same fish about 15 minutes later.

Over all a great day on the water. Attached are pictures of seven of the fish. One that Travis caught we did not get a picture of because I was down at the end of the run when he landed it.

We caught most of the fish on a chartreuse trout bead with a bright orange puff ball on the hook. Some were caught on a red or orange trout bead with the orange puff ball. This was the first time we have fished a puff ball on the hook. I just saw them at Sportsmans an picked up a couple of packages. I don't know if it made any difference but we did seem to have faster action than anyone else around us. It was probably just our lucky day because most of the other guys around us have been fishing for steelhead for a lot longer than we have.

Don't suppose you have a photo handy of your set up you could post? I'd love to see what that looks like-

Thanks,

Attached is a picture. The hook is a size 4 and I think the trout bead is 6 mm. Its hard to believe fish that big would take such a small bait.

Nice fish. You guys did alot better than most people last weekend. I was out there friday with 3 friends and we only caught 3 fish and I caught 2 of them. 2 of my friends stayed out there all weekend and only caught a couple more fish. I caught both of my fish on a hot pink glow bug with a chartreuse dot in it.

Maybe the chartreuse color had something to do with it???

I kind of think the puff ball kept the bead at the right depth for the fish to see them. But who knows the next time we go they might want something totally different.
