Doug Darr, Aquatic Education Coordinator for the Alabama Division Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF), has been named president-elect of the Aquatic Resources Education Association (AREA) during the association's recent biannual meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. AREA is a non-governmental association dedicated to using sound educational practices to promote stewardship and responsible use of aquatic resources, fisheries, and habitats to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations. As president-elect, Darr will plan the 2012 AREA meeting.
As a biologist with WFF, Darr oversees the education programs of the Division's Fisheries Section. Last year, the WFF worked with partners to provide 58 community fishing events for 11,381 anglers. Biologists and aides with the Division presented 234 talks about the aquatic environment, including the new hands-on school program at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park called "Creek Kids." WFF employees also held 82 fishing classes that included discussions about ethics, and taught another 3,000 youth how to cast.
