Randy Mikels caught this 25-pound, 37" rainbow (Gerrard) on Lake Pend Oreille recently at the annual Halloween Derby on a fly he tied (and colored with a marks-alot) the previous evening. Several other fish in the low 20's and high teens were caught. By the way, fishing is hot at Kootenay Lake with lots of huge trout, many in the 20's, being caught recently. Kamloops and Gerrard are one and the same. The Kamloops in Pend Oreille were transplanted from Kootenay Lake, where they are indiginous. The Gerrards in Kootenay were in trouble just as they are in Pend Oreille until a few years ago when they started dumping large quantities of phospate in the lake, and bingo, they are coming back like gangbusters. The guides up there are catching trout in the 20+ pound range on a weekly basis. It is a terrific place to fish. The bull trout are also huge. Typical way to fish it is to "fly' a streamer across the surface at 3-4 m.p.h. when there is a chop on the water, and to use plugs or Apex, which the Canadians refer to as "hockey sticks", when it is flat. The lake is huge, 100 miles long! Mike

Here are two more sites that give you good information on Kootenay Lake fishing. The guides up there typically charter out for salmon on Vancouver Island in the summer, and fish the fall, winter, and spring on Kootenay. The summer fishing is usually pretty poor. If you want more info, let me know; I am certainly not an expert, but have fished it twice in the past three years, and have learned a fair amount about it. Mike
