I have to go measure a cabin for cabinets at the beginning of December up at strawberry. I figured that I would try and fish while I am up there. Will I be fishing open water or will I need to bring my ice gear?

Open for sure. I believe we were some of the first on the ice last year on December 14th.

I'd have to agree about the berry being open as well... i think with the way the warm weather has been and stufff i would say @ the 1st part of jan. to start getting the ice'n gear accessible..either way my friend take a pole with ya and make the trip worth your time... GOOD-LUCK[fishin]

Drove by yesterday, you will definitely need a pole!
I'd say a couple more weeks before it even starts to form.

Normally, the ice over the entire lake isn't fishable until mid to late December. Many of the bays ice up sooner. Mud Creek is one of the first and often you can get on it the first weekend of December. the ice usually isn't too thick and if you don't mind the pucker factor, it is fishable. Chicken creek isn't too far behind. Last year was a slow year for ice up. This year could be another.
