As I drove to work this morning the temperature reading in my truck bounced between +1 F and - 2 F if the temps stay down for a few days we should be seeing some fishable ice. I know some of the high elevation lakes are freezing. Are there any new ice reports out there??

I'll bite on that invite. Fished a high mountain lake on saturday, I hope you will all excuse me for not disclosing as this lake would feel crowded with one or two groups on the ice. Anyway lots of snow, 6 inches of iffy ice, and 175 dink trout in three hours. Great start to the ice fishing season but I expect that it will be my last this year to this lake as the snow was at 2 feet and piling up fast. Probably has 4-5 feet on it now and no fish in it worth digging through that much snow. I will have to try a week earlier up there next year.

I bet I know where you where. I'm not going to call it out of course cuz it's my "secret" too but let me tell you the ice forming conditions were NOT good this year! Too much snow and not enough pure dry cold. A week ago I walked on it but for the first time ever it was not as solid as I thought. I took a little dip! Good thing I stayed shallow but it was out in the middle. I flopped around like a seal to get outta that hole! It felt weak to the chisel but sometimes don't be too overeager. Learned the hard way haha. It was just very thin hardened slush layers in combo, no real ice except for a quarter inch of clear. I'm gonna stick with at least two inches of hard solid ice from now on.

Could be the same place, of the dozen or so times I have ice fished it I have never seen another person on it and never seen a hole drilled. I know what you mean about flopping around like a seal. I usually fall through once or twice a year but I try to be prepared for it. Never fun though.

I know the recent winds havent helped ice formation. Just figured if we keep the deep freeze on for a few days and people having some time off for the holiday that someone might get out and explore a little. I am going out looking around on friday so will see what happens.
