Not sure about Newton. Heard it was iced over last weekend, but only about 1 1/2 inches at the ramp. As for Hyrum, I went by there Saturday. The southeast end (opposite of the dam) was frozen up to where the stream dumps in. Didn't get out and go see how thick it was. But the rest of it was wide open. Then again, it was 4 days ago and we did have some chilly days between then and now.

We had a lot of success there last year. It was a lot of fun for us.

Curious - do you know - does Benson/Cutler freeze up safely? Or is there too much moving water under there? I'm still itching to find some of the crappie that're rumored to be out there (and Walleye - I wanna be a believer!).
Definitely be planning on hitting both Newton and Hyrum once things harden up. Thanks for the question, and the answers. Been wondering how Newton was doing.
Got into perch at both locations this summer/fall and we had a good time at it. Would be nice to find some chunky ones under the ice. Managed to hit into some Newton crappie a couple times. Though they may have moved out of "crappie cove" to deeper waters I'd guess.
Just hope some Musky doesn't come stealing my bait or my catch. There ain't NO way I'm trying to pull a Musky up through an ice hole unless I invest in some of them jaw-grabbers!
Plus - don't think my little ice poles could handle the workout - though I've seen it done (Youtube has a fun vid of exactly that - sorry don't have the link).

I saw some guys fishing on part of the bear river/benson marina saturday. I have fished on some of the sloughs but never the marina.

I was on newton today, the ice is only 2 1/2 inches, a little scary but we did fish for a bit, had some bites ealry caught to little perch then it was like the fish moved and i didn't really want to move around on the thin ice so we left. Hyrum was trying to freeze but this warmer weather has pushed it all off. Probably won't be til christmas for hyrum, unless it gets super cold again. Last year we didn't get on porcupine until after hyrum was froze solid, I haven't been up there but I'll bet its not froze either.

I agree with Hyrum. I was fishing on Hyrum last year as soon as finals let out, which was around Dec 14th. But I would be surprised if it was capped in a couple of weeks. But who knows. I would like for it to be fishable from the ice by the time I am done this semester. The southeast end might be by then. I hoping for that at least.
