So I am in the market for a new trolling plate and I've been reading all the reviews on cabelas and bassproshops. What brands have you had and did you like them? I was going to buy the new hydrofoil from cabelas but it has terrible reviews. The Easy troller is the most money with the best reviews but the Troll-a-matic has a good report and is less then half the price. Not sure if buying a rubber plate over metal plate is a smart decision though. I need some advice. Anyone?

That Troll-a-Matic is new to me but I bet I'll try one come spring. I had a (used) Happy Troller and fought with it all last season. With it fully down as the manufacturer intended, I had such lousy steering control that I decided to try the modification recommended on Cabelas comments page, that is making another set of slots to hold the plate at 45 degrees. That worked a little better but I still fought with getting the plate to unlock when I wanted to move and stay locked.

The plate was bent when I bought it, straightened and welded and bent and or straightened and welded a couple times before I finally removed it as a waste of time and grief.

A buddy runs one on his boat and seems to like it. Maybe I just bought a bad apple, don't know. But next year that automatic plate might get my nod.

Both of my last 2 boats had happy trollers on them when I bought them. I tried em a couple times. I wasnt "happy" with them and took them off. Some folks seem to get along with the happy troller alright. Both are like brand new, so if someone needs one, I'll make a helluva deal!

Thanks for the info. So far everyone I have heard from who has had a happy troller has been unhappy. I bought a trolll-a-matic last night. I guess we'll see how it works out.
