Full Version: Are we in trouble with the ice tomorrow?

The warmer weather and rain has probably scuttled my plans. I wanted to get my dad out for the first ice trip[ of the season. We live right close together but haven't seen each other in weeks, and I was planning on UL. BUT, the ice was sketchy on Sat, so I imagine it's barely there, now......

Where else could we go?

Or do we try the harbors at UL (something I'm not that knowledgeable about) in semi-slushy conditions? Will the panfish still be there if there isn't ice? And will we be able to reach them with no Ice to walk on?

Pelican isn't iced yet is it?

Uintas? No snow machines, but....

Any guidance appreciated, thanks...

I think the ice is in trouble. I doube we will see safe (4+" in my book) ice till the first of the year. There will be plenty of ok ice, but nothing I would trust too much.

UL from the docks @ Lindon has been good-Great early and late in the day. Kastmeaster and an ice fly above 1'. Tipped with worm or meat. Move every 15 mins till you find em. Try different depths. I dont know how they will act with ice or without it. The lake is opening up in the main part too in many areas. It is all messed up so far this year, all bets are off.

That may be fun to hit later in the week, but dont know for sure. I am sure where ever you decide to go that it will be a great day out.

I fished UL today from the docks in provo bay. The ice was 3 inches or so. I got brave and walked out about thiry feet and drilled a couple holes. It was the same thickness. We caught some white bass, perch, and bluegill. It was pretty slow overall. I asked another angler nearby if he caught anything and he said a couple. Not sure what though. We ended the day at the docks at Lincoln Beach and caught more perch and about fifteen white bass in an hour. It shut off all of the sudden and no more bites. I walked out and the ice was 2.5-5 inches. Kinda spooky but fish are catchable from the docks.
I would think that Scofield should have safe ice.

I'm not sure about elsewhere but Utah lake harbors are not safe ice in most places. It looked to be about 2 inches of soggy mushy ice that shrank to 1/4 inch and open water pockets by the dock floats where the sun radiates heat onto the ice on south facing sides. I didn't dare to step on it for sure and I have fished utah lake on 1 1/2 inches many times. It is just not solid anymore and it would be almost a sure dip tomorrow. I would stay on them docks if I were you. Tweaked out 60 whites today from AF dock.

The lake is opening up in the main part! I saw open water patches too today. YEEES! LOL. It's the most wonderful time of the year! The hap happiest season of ALL! I hope we get some wind now haha.[Wink]

Basin area waters aren't ready yet either. Most are wide open. Pelican has ice, but unless you know someone who has been out on it recently, I wouldn't trust it yet. Vernal high temps have been in the 40's and lows barely freezing at night. Try a higher elevation pond for now.

I would think that scofield is safe still. Same with E Lake and the rest of them up Fairview.

Matua might still be ok, but I heard it is slushville on top. 4 inches of clear hard ice takes a lot to melt.

I will agree with the others. The ice was deteriorating quickly on the weekend. With night time temps barely reaching freezing and daytime temps in the 40s I would opt for another fishing spot. UL ice will continue to go down hill unless we get some deep freeze temps. None forcasted for the next little while. High elevation lakes that had ice may be a better bet
