Hey everyone! im new to this site. im looking into stepping up to a bait caster rod and reel. I purchased an X-factor reel and am looking at the [#00573d]Abu Garcia Veritas Casting Rod[/#00573d] found at the gander mountain site. Do you guys know much about them? would this be a good starter rod for me to go with the x-factor reel?

Please check the faq about posting links, We dont need to know the web page you are looking at, we just need modle and series numbers of each item you are trying to match up.
both are respectible peices of equipment,

as for it beeing a good starter combo for you, we cant realy answer that because dont know your skill level, Bait casting rigs do take lots of pratice to be able to use properly and configure the settings variable for the different lure weight classificatons.

When you change between different weights you have to ajust your reel for that weight.

If your fimiliar with bait casting reels, then the next thing you need to do is match your rod with your reel.

Fortunatly when you find a rod you like, it comes in a veriety of sizes. "your store may not cary different sizes"

Look at the packaging to see the specifications of your reel, it will give you a lure and line weight classifications, meaning the smallest to the largest weight of a lure and line the reel is disigned for.

To match your bait casting reel, you look at a bait casting rod, "not a spin casting rod" They too are rated by lure weight and line weight classifications.

Matching up your rod is simply matching the two clasifications to each other. So if you find a style rod you like, look to make sure they match, if they dont, look to see if they have a size of that modle and style that dose match, sometimes this means going to the manufacture and they can lead you to a store near you that you can visit or is capable to ship to you what you need.

Just telling us that you have an x factor reel, dosnt realy tell us any thing. We need a modle and series numbers in order to be sure we are properly matcing up your reel to the rod style and classification.

Fortunatly, for novis anglers, many stores have a knolage of this and match the combos for you, or they order combo kits and just need to be assembled for display and sales.

Well sorry about the link. I copied and pasted from the site and it came up with the link. I deleted it and it still prompt me with the link so im not sure what happened.

There is only 2 model numbers for that reel that i could find and one is a left hand and the other is a right. the one i got is GMX101HPT. I was told that if im going to switch to a baitcaster to spend some money and buy something nice. This reel is what i though was the best for the money. I went to gander and looked at this rod and the salesman talked me into the St. Croix Mojo-Bass 6'6 medium action. it was 10 dollars cheaper than the Abu Garcia. The salesman just said it would be a good match but he didnt really seem so sure about it. Im just hoping ill like this setup. This setup is the best that i can afford at this time. Thanks for the info.

Reel: line capacity 12lb/110yards, bearings 7+1

St. Croix Mojo: action-fast, power-medium, line weight 10-17lbs, lure weight 1/4-5/8

is it a fairly good match?

If you break your rod on a bass with combo, be sure to tip your hat to that hog as he swims away...

I personaly dont like bait casting reels, "I only have 150+ of them [:p]... lol but I do like the way this one looks, It is perdy and looks rugged enough with out all that plastic housing...

I have done it, so go ahead and laugh, that 30 inch lunker died of winter kill, I battled him a dozen times over 10 years.

anyway, that should work for well for you, its not the best match, but it is in the ball park.

what you want to do now is spend just a couple more dollars and buy your self some casting plugs. they are cheep but worth thier weight in rodium as a learning tool.

Find your self a clean serface water or clean tile floor hallway to start praticing.

That rod should hold up for you for many years so long as you dont step on it or slam it in the door. I think you will be ok with this combo. Be sure to read the instructions on setting your casting barrol.

If you should break this rod, I am not saying take this one back because it will, it is a fine rod. I am saying if you do break it, there is a rino glowtip series that makes a great bass rod, I have one that I use for salmon if that tells you anything about what that rod can handle. the only thing I have seen stronger is an ugly stick.

Hope to see some hogs comming from your way soon. I think you will be vary happy with this combo once you get the casting part down.

I messed around with one of them St. Croix Mojo-Bass rods at the store before an i really did not like it because it felt like i weighed a ton. When i fish im out there all day throwing plastic around the last think i want is a heavy rod that will make my arm sore. I recommend Powell fishing rods. They are light weight, super strong and very sensitive.
